Kia ora koutou
Firstly, apologies for the tofu but this seemed like such an important
series of events (details below) that I want to shout the news from
the rooftops.
I've long suspected that the principles, the practices and the social
movement steadily aggregating around the notion of 'permaculture'
since the 70s are the best hope humanity has of surviving the
transition into energy decline (one we pass the point of peak
production of non-renewable energy fuels). To me permaculture offers a
positive, practical and empowering way to address a whole raft of
social and environmental issues from poverty to climate change.
These events (details below) offer an opportunity to hear directly
from one of the two Australian originators of the permaculture, David
Holmgren (the other is Bill Mollison). But more significant to me is
that finally there is an event happening in Aotearoa which explores
the connections between the emerging problem of 'peak oil' and the
solutions offered by permaculture. This will be an opportunity for
network and info-sharing and hopefully be another step towards a
sustainable, community-controlled Aotearoa.
Please pass this information on to anyone you think may be interested.
If anyone has any information about similar events happening around
the country, especially in Poneke (Wgtn), please let me know.
Unfortunately I will struggle to make it to Nelson for that weekend so
I'm hoping permission, equipment and volunteers can be assembled to
record the events and make them available online.

website for more in depth information and background to each topic. Contact

1. AFTERNOON INVITATION TO THE PRESENTATION 26TH APRIL 2007
With an overview of permaculture solutions, David Holmgren focuses on the
suburbs in a case study of permaculture design thinking. Featuring a
suburban street makeover scenario, building from the 1950s history to a
late 2000s permaculture retrofit. Quite populist and humorous in style,
this presentation is aimed at suburban homeowners (current and prospective)
and provides permaculture considerations for policy and decision makers,
which may be central, rather than peripheral to urban sustainability. The
background and scenarios are Australian but are fully translatable to New
Zealands climatic and social context.
2. EVENING LECTURE 26 APRIL 2007.
We are fortunate to have David Holmgren, a world-renowned permaculture
expert touring NZ in April.
He is speaking at the Nelson Council Chambers on Thursday evening. This
Presentation uses scenario-planning modelling to integrate likely impacts of
peak oil and gas and climate change over the next 20-30 years. It uses big
picture systems thinking perspective to provide activists and planners with
conceptual tools for organising the information storm about these issues and
likely impacts. The relevance of both mainstream sustainability and
permaculture strategies to the four energy descent scenarios is outlined.
Details are listed on the flyer attached.
3. WEEKEND SYMPOSIUM 28 & 29 APRIL 2007
A frank discussion on the energy transition we face and workshops
contributing appropriate and practical responses, which will help, mitigate
the risks arising from the large-scale changes required both locally and
nationally.
There will be seven speakers including:
* ¨Alan Hart, CEO of Summit Exploration (Oil & Gas)
* ¨David Holmgren, Ecologist, Ecological Design Engineer&
Internationally renowned Permaculture Speaker
