SYLVIE FORTIN NAMED ACTING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/EDITOR OF ART PAPERS

(May 16, 2007, ATLANTA) – Sylvie Fortin has been named
Acting Executive Director/Editor of Art Papers, Inc.
After an extensive international search for the next
Executive Director, the organization’s Board of Directors
is pleased to announce that it has selected its current
Editor-in-Chief Sylvie Fortin to lead the organization’s
next chapter.

Fortin's new responsibilities begin immediately, and include
the oversight of all aspects of Art Papers' operations
and programs. Peter Bahouth, Board President of Art Papers
comments, “Sylvie’s deep knowledge of contemporary art and
the issues addressed by artists around the world, combined
with her understanding of the important role of cultural
discourse in contemporary society, will be critically important
to Art Papers as we move into the next phase of our development.”

Fortin joined Art Papers, Inc. as Editor-in-Chief of ART PAPERS
magazine in October 2004. In just 2.5 years, she worked closely
with outgoing Executive Director Jamie Badoud and Art Papers’
staff and Board to steer the organization to new heights.
Art Papers’ annual budget grew from $500,651 in 2004 to a
projected $765,350 in 2007. In the last six months alone,
ART PAPERS has received major awards from the Andy Warhol Foundation
for the Visual Arts, the American Center Foundation, and
the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund in recognition of the impact
and excellence of its programs.

“The organization has an enviable international reputation,
tremendous momentum, an ambitious strategic plan, and solid
management practices. I look forward to continuing to work
with Art Papers’ exceptional Board and staff to execute our
shared trailblazing vision,” says Fortin, Acting Executive
Director/Editor of Art Papers. “I am thrilled that a growing number
of funders recognize the importance of our mission and the
excellence of our programs. Their contributions are enabling
us to make our vision a reality.”

“This is a crucial moment in the history of our organization.
As ART PAPERS magazine and our public programs continue to raise
the bar, the organization is assuredly positioning itself as the
source for contemporary art. I look forward to developing Art Papers’
structure, expanding our staff, and developing our resources
to fulfill our tremendous potential,” concludes Fortin.

Sylvie Fortin is an independent curator, art historian, critic,
and editor who has been working internationally since 1991. She
was Curator of Contemporary Art at the Ottawa Art Gallery (1996–2001),
Editor & Program Coordinator at OBORO (Montréal; 1994-1996)
and Program Coordinator at la chambre blanche (Québec, 1991–1994).
Fortin’s critical essays have been published in Canadian,
American, and European catalogues, and her reviews have appeared
in many periodicals including Art Press, C Magazine, Espace,
Fuse, NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art and Parachute.
Educated at the University of Toronto, Université Laval, and
Duke University, Fortin has received numerous very prestigious
awards for both her curatorial and her academic work.

About Art Papers

Art Papers is dedicated to the examination, development, and
definition of art and culture in the world today. Its mission
is to provide an independent and accessible forum for the exchange
of perspectives on the role of contemporary art as a socially
relevant and engaged discourse. This mission is implemented
through the publication of ART PAPERS magazine, which began
in 1977 as the Atlanta Art Workers Coalition's newsletter,
and other public programs. With a continually growing network
of writers, editors, and collaborators, Art Papers is now
a major international institution that, based in Atlanta,
uniquely defines contemporary art as it happens.
