Auckland Indymedia presents.......

THE ANTIDOTE #10

Xmas Party

Sunday 12 December 2004

The Classic Comedy Bar (321 Queen Street, CBD)

7.00pm start time for films

This month's Antidote #10 features a varied line up of documentaries on
topics relating to human rights to celebrate Human Rights Day (December
10th). The programme includes documentaries on child slavery and the sexual
exploitation of young Burmese girls in Thailand and the resettlement of
refugees in Auckland. Also on the programme there are two short
documentaries: the first takes a satirical look at the alleged 'casing
video' shot by Ahmed Zauoi while the second pokes fun at the recent Auckland
mayoral race.

The screening will be followed by the annual Indymedia Xmas party with
snacks and music provided.

The Zauoi 'Casing Video' (10 mins)

In a 10 minute summary of Ahmed Zaoui's travel video, Channel Z's
Martin'Bomber' Bradbury delves deep into the murky psyches of the New
Zealand SIS...Bomber attempts to fathom how our spooks claimed that amateur
handycam footageof elephants and tuk-tuks was in fact a 'casing video'.

Sacrifice - Ellen Bruno (47 mins)

Sacrifice by Ellen Bruno is a carefully crafted, visually creative
documentary which takes on the issue of child slavery and sexual
exploitation by focusing on the personal stories of young Burmese girls sold
by their families to brothels in Thailand. Four young prostitutes recount
their experiences making a poignant plea for survival. With an alternating
dreamlike and nightmarish vision, the documentary talks about how each year
thousands of young girls are recruited from rural Burmese villages to work
in the sex industry in neighboring Thailand. Held for years in debt bondage
in illegal Thai brothels, they suffer extreme abuse by pimps, clients and
the police. The trafficking of Burmese girls has soared in recent years as a
direct result of political repression in Burma.. However, despite their
systematic exploitation - their virginity sold many times over - these women
convey a sense of dignity as they bravely bare witness to the abuse they
have endured.

The Girl from Glenn Innes - Jude Smith (30 mins)

Girl from Glen Innes explores a Burmese teenager's transition from refugee
to New Zealand citizen. Tinmama Oo arrived in Auckland as a 13 year old
Burmese refugee. Now in her final year at high school, she has embraced her
new life with great gusto. Tinmama talks to her mother Su Myat about the
democracy uprising in Burma and interviews people helping refugees settle in
New Zealand. Coverage includes the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre and
historical footage from Burma. Her interview with the Prime Minister Helen
Clark places the family's experience within the framework of the
international Refugee Convention and New Zealand's refugee quota system.
This video has been developed for use with the NZ Social Studies curriculum,
years 8-13.

And to finish off the programme.....

The Serious Business of the Auckland Mayoralty - Stephen Moller and
Genevieve Collier (15 mins)

This short doco takes a not-so-serious look at the lead-up to recent local
body elections in Auckland. It is a light-hearted look at the main
characters vying for the mayoral chains: incumbent John Banks, ex-mayor
Christine Fletcher and Johnny come lately, cereal king Dick Hubbard. We know
how the story turns out of course but you'll enjoy the foibles as they
unfold on the campaign trail. Well-produced in a short timeframe by Media
Design School students Stephen Moller and Genevieve Collier.

The Antidote is a regular forum for the exposure of alternative political
