[imc-baghdad] List Issues & Finance

Yep, I agree with Chris. This very topic went round and round on the new IMC listserve back in February -- at that time, it was decided that electroniciraq.net was doing just about all that could be done at that time... to get out real on-the-ground info.... Two notes about what circled then: many people were against the idea of calling anything that did not follow the IMC model to the letter "an IMC" -- on the other hand, about an equal number said this is something IMC needs to work on -- that many people in many places need to be supported in their first steps down the path, maybe, to a fully possible/capable IMC and there need to be models in place for that, as well-- such as community papers/radio -- more possible in places that may not have internet capability. Of course, the main goal as most people, I hope, see the listserve is to have Iraqis eventually run things themselves and to get out of the way when they are ready to do that. It would be great to have what they have to say/print/write broadcast over the web -- but if they eventually decide resources are better used in some other way -- well.... When we have a secure place to send money, some folks here at KPFK (Pacifica) here in LA would like to speak to someone about this project, to get out the word, and to help do a little fundraising. We need a secure place to send cash and some means (PayPal -- what??)-- One of the main people involved at KPFK had a very good point about this project -- this can serve as a model for how outsiders can now proceed in Iraq . Help the people there get the training and resources they need and then get out of their way later on to let them do things themselves. For risk of sounding dense, we had a lot of emails yesterday about where to send cash... has that been decided yet? And, if this is decided, is there anyone with detailed knowledge about what is planned willing to spend some time talking on a progressive radio show about this? If so, I will recontact those folks re: this and get it going and send the cash along being raised here. Cheers!Crystal

I was thinking about a number of things regarding this list and its purpose
and how that relates to finances.

Couple of assumptions:
- the list is, if not entirely composed of, totally dominated by
non-Iraqis, and people not in Iraq
- Iraqis will not be able ready to form an actual IMC via the new-imc
process for several months

I think the decisions we are about to make should be made strictly on the
basis of how we as a group will provide support to the Iraqis and indy
journalists on the ground.

I think this is what people are thinking - but I wanted to see if we are
all on the same page - as it would be overstepping our bounds to do
anything else. Having written this - it seems so obvious as to have been a
waste of time to write.

But that got me thinking about this list - it seems that this list at this
point is not really about organizing an Iraqi IMC but rather in supporting
a group of Iraqis and Independent reporters on the ground in Iraq.

I wonder if anyone else needed this post but me...

List note: Jacquie is now an admin also. The reason I was the first admin
was that I put in the request for the list a few weeks before Jacquie did -
so there was some confusion.

On the website - I hope to set up a dadaIMC site tomorrow so we can see if
that will work ... it will likely not be the final resting spot of the
site, as I think Spike and the Bristol crew are better poised to host it,
but it will at least solve our problem of knowing how well dada works with
Arabic text and will allow us to start fixing those problems while Spike
works to install dada on his box ... if we go that route. At least that is
my impression of where we are at with the server issue.
