Body: second part for imc-solidarity website

What is being done

    - Legal

Indymedia is currently exploring legal options with a number of attorneys and advocacy
organizations in several countries, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation
(EFF). Read legal updates about Indymedia at EFF.org and Indymedia.org .

After EFF contacted the FBI to demand that Indymedia's illegally seized hardware be
returned, the U.S. government returned the seized hard drives on 13 October 2004.
Nonetheless, EFF continues to prepare for any necessary legal action. According to EFF,
"The FBI can't pull the plug on more than 20 news websites -- our modern printing presses --
based on a secret proceeding at the request of a foreign government. This is a flagrant
violation of the First Amendment. The government can't shut down the New York Times, and
    it can't shut down Indymedia."

Indymedia's legal support team is also determining how the governments of the UK, Italy,
and Switzerland have been involved with the seizure.

    - Political

Parliamentarians in several countries, including Italy and the UK, have made
statements criticizing the seizure of Indymedia's hardware. MP Jeremy Corbyn
described the seizure as "part of an extremely disturbing trend towards excessive
control of the dissemination of knowledge" by those in power.

Activist and media organizations have also criticized the kidnapping of Indymedia's
webservers. UK Stop the War Coalition spokesman Andrew Burgin called the confiscation
"part of the international campaign to destroy democratic rights and civil liberties."
Statements have been issued by the ASCII Collective , Statewatch , Project Censored , the
Association for Progressive Communications , the International Federation of
Journalists , the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters , the Dutch
Federation of Journalists , Reporters Without Borders , and the Belgian Journalist
    Association .

    - Media

Reports on the server seizure have appeared in hundreds of news outlets around the world (
English | French | German | Italian | Spanish ). The IMC press team is available to answer
your questions and for live interviews: e-mail press at indymedia.org . Hopefully
independent reporters will be able to get to the bottom of the still-secret
investigations which have targeted the Indymedia network and find out "who took
    Ahimsa."

What you can do

    - Invite your friends, representatives, and colleagues to sign on using the form at
    right.

Write to your local representative or party and ask them to support Indymedia in this free
speech battle by signing the solidarity statement, bringing the issue onto the floor of
parliament or other legislature, and holding the authorities accountable for any
abuses of the law. In the UK, Fax your MP ; in the US, contact your member of the House or
    Senate .

Contact local advocacy organizations and ask them to issue a statement and/or sign this
    solidarity statement.

    - Ask questions

Pick up the phone and call the government of the US, UK, Switzerland, or Italy.
Unfortunately, you will have to work through an impenetrable maze of bureaucracy.

Why was the Indymedia hardware seized? Who was responsible for requesting or
authorising the seizure, in this and other countries? Who were the servers handed over
to? Which officers were present when the servers were seized? Which agencies have or have
had access to the data stored on the Indymedia servers?

    - Protest

Organize a protest against the repression of free online speech in your town! Let us
know about it and we'll list it here on this page. And remember, you may have unwanted
hardware which is wanted by the authorities!

        - Netherlands, 13 Oct: Delivering symbolic old hardware to the Italian consulate in
        Amsterdam

        - USA, 14 Oct: Activists surrender hardware to FBI in San Francisco

    - Donate

Several IMCs are collecting donations to help support legal expenses and hardware
        costs following the seizure:

        - IMC Tech

        - UK IMC

        - SF Bay Area IMC

    - After you've done all that, you can relax and play the videogame Operation Enduring
    Indymedia !
