Earth Day - April 22nd - is on the way!  Below you’ll find the what’s, when’s, where’s and more 
about many local happenings.  Hope everyone enjoys the weekend.

***CONGRATULATIONS!!!*** to Student Environmental Center and partners for the smashing success of 
the EcoDawgs proposal vote!  This group of young leaders has shown great vision, energy, 
commitment and capacity in moving our community toward a greener future.  Find out more at their

1) Big Muddy IMC Friday Films presents “Pickaxe”

To stop proposed ‘salvage’ logging, citizens in Oregon are moved to blockade a road to keep the 
government out.  After facing down a bulldozer and the State Police, a developing community forms 
to protect ancient forests throughout the mountains of Oregon.

2) Keep Carbondale Beautiful Spring Clean Up & Recycling Day
Sat., April 19, 8am-noon
Turley Park

This 21st citywide litter cleanup is Carbondale’s participation in the Great American Cleanup 
campaign.  Volunteers will each get a free organic cotton t-shirt, hot dog lunch, plus chance to 
compete for various prizes – as well as bragging rights! – in the collection contest.  Wear your 
grubbies and come join us, rain or shine.  The Energy Bike demonstration will be at the Turley 
Park Pavilion, presented by Aur Beck of Advanced Energy Solutions.

3) Free Household Chemical Collection
Sat., April 19, 8am-3pm
Southern Illinois Airport

Clear the clutter!  If you’ve been hanging onto paint, various oils and solvents, lawn chemicals 
etc because you’re not sure how to properly dispose of them, here’s your chance!  Jackson County 
sponsors this collection, and encourages residents to especially bring in any mercury-containing

4) Biointensive Gardening Workshop

8) At John A. Logan College, small business owners, artists, biologists and human rights activists 
describe their work in building a sustainable future.  Celebrate Earth Day by learning about the 
possibilities!  Bioneers* DVD presentations will be shown in the JALC Dining Room Annex (west 
entrance).  The presentations are 1/2 hour each and begin at 11am.  Have lunch with us!
