The short version:
I am now available most weekends (including Saturday mornings) and would be more than happy to help with anything that is scheduled.

I am sorry I kept putting off taking the trash out. I am officially out of hibernation, so expect me to be more accountable to the group.

Also, if no one is opposed, I think it would be an asset to begin establishing a formal structure for the IMC. It would be cool to start working on that on Monday if people agree.

The long version:
There are a
couple of things I feel need to be addressed with the IMC that
could make the group function in a way that would probably make everyone a little more sane. There has been a noticeable hesitancy on my part to get back involved in the IMC, mainly because of these issues. I would normally do this over the work list, but I'm not sure everyone who has been helping lately is on it and this is a dialog (or a diatribe depending on whether anyone responds) that needs to include them.

The Problem:
The IMC has been plagued since I have been involved in the group with a strange ailment that we have diagnosed a number of ways to little avail. It is no one's fault who ever was or is currently involved with the group. In fact, it's a testament to the will of those who are still around that they haven't already succumbed to the associated frustrations. We don't need to go into the details here, but the gist of the underlying issue is that we were mistaking various symptoms for the true disease, which is simply a lack of structure and accountability. I think at one point we discussed resolving this issue, but the ideas didn't come to fruition. There are a lot of reasons I only recognize now contributed to this, but it's not worth dwelling on any aspect of them aside from what they can teach us.

The Solution:
This breaks up into two parts which interrelate, one tangible the other intangible. A philosophy and a structure.

The philosophy:
Lack of accountability is the disease I have come to realize plagues damn near every organization... except the ones that thrive. I have also realized that the main reason isn't because people are lazy or absent minded or just don't care, it's that there are a few key elements of the group that are either missing completely or out of balance. These elements are in fact two aspects of a singular entity I've referred to as accountability. The first, intangible element is empowerment, or the personal motivation that gives rise to action. The second, tangible element is organization, or the physical or organizational means that makes action possible. These two elements can exist without each other, but alone they are about as good as a light bulb without energy, or energy with nothing to conduct it towards an end.

The structure:
There are infinite ways we could create a structure that could cure the disease, some better than others. However, there are a few elements to organizing that make up a structure, no matter how you work it out. This too has two interrelating tangible and intangible parts. The tangible is... well, a structure. The skeleton, steal frame, etc. Like I already said this can look like anything as long as it addresses the needs of the folks who create it. The intangible is in reality more a sum of various parts. These parts are basically just all the random bells and whistles you come up with to make sure the people filling the positions provided by the structure actually live up to their responsibilities. These are necessary not because we think people are negligent, rather because we all understand how difficult it is to keep yourself in order, let alone a group of other people or the affairs with which they have entrusted you.

So, what next?

We don't have to look too far to come up with a good structure. Tons that already exist could do the job. There are also tons of bells and whistles you all use in your own life and still more that others use to better direct themselves and their organizations, we need only look. For example, google documents is an AMAZING organizational resource I was recently turned on to that would help all the random ideas that pop into folks heads actually make it onto an agenda. However, the documents do nothing without a structure that places responsibility upon someone to make them coherent and bring them to the group in person. This means that people who have the time and inclination have to step up into the roles the we as an organization create. This is all pretty intuitive, I know, I'm REALLY not trying to sound patronizing. It's just that sometimes the obvious things right out in front of us aren't really obvious until they're made obvious. .

I hope no one is put off by my rather candid expression of my opinions and advise. (Who am I anyway?) I'm also sorry if anyone feels these issues are already being dealt with and I'm only ignorant of the fact. I trust everyone understands that every word comes from a place of genuine optimism and love. Either way, I've said my piece and hope to hear feedback at Monday's meeting.

I am providing information regarding renovation, maintenance and
improvement plans for the BMIMC Space at 214 North Washington in
Carbondale. Please spend a little time reviewing the lists, since this
maintenance and improvement is simply an attempt to allow the Space to
become a greater Community Asset. There is a true opportunity to do
 this
since two competent members of the construction trades have offered
 there
expertise and ability to accomplish this. With some additional sweat
 from
a few other volunteers, this can become real.

If, anyone else wishes to offer labor, material or equipment for the
listed purposes below, please reply to this list. Also, Sheridan has a
cost estimate for some materials so if you would prefer to just give
 the
old greenback, it will be put to good use.

There is also a need for some simple necessities to improve the Space.
  A
push broom, cleaning supplies, bleach, trash bags, batteries,
 industrial
grade extension cords, heat tape, ceramic tile, toilet paper, towels
 (both
paper and cloth), pens, hot cups, batteries, adhesive tape, furnace
filters and appropriate furniture are a few of the items really needed
 to
realize our goal for improving our community commitment.

      1) Improvements

If you haven't met Sheridan, our Herrin participant, this is a great
opportunity. He has been involved in the construction trades for a few
decades. He has offered his time and skills to renovate and improve the
facade and front area. He has the cost estimates I referred to earlier.
 He
is looking for assistance as well. If you have any interest in learning
about the trades, here is an excellent opportunity to learn from
 someone
who actually knows them.

2)Roof

Unfortunately, the roof should really be resurfaced. The incessant rain
 we
have had lately makes that an obvious need. It is simply a matter of
tarring it. Hot tar is what the roof needs, unfortunately a large vat
 or
tar bucket is also necessary. Rory Jaros has said he is willing to
 help.
As a member of the construction trades, his ability adds a lot to his
offer. He is convinced we can do it without a vat but rather by heating
the tar in buckets. If someone is willing to help, this is a messy but
 not
too difficult task. Reply if you wish to participate.

3)Graffiti

We definitely need to remove the graffiti from the building facade. It
 is
extremely high up on the building. We got a delay in fine
 implementation
by the City but it must be painted over. I believe we have someone
willing to paint it over. He's the reggae master at WDBX. He may need a
little help so feel free to ask him.

4)Internet access

Another positive use of the Space is providing high speed Internet
 access
to the community. The necessary equipment is there to set up a 2 or 3
computer network plus wireless access for laptops. It is possible to
 get
high speed Internet access to the Space as we did previously, however,
 the
City has a wireless gateway that should be available for free to
requesting non-profits. We need a few interested Carbondale residents
 to
request that the City provide the BMIMC continuous access explaining
 that
it will provide community access. I and others will work with the City
 and
provide our own radio for access to one of their wireless access
 points.
If you are interested in making this request, please reply to the list.

5) Trash

I removed the trash cans from the back room and placed them up front,
simply because it prevented access to the rear, which is essential.
Unfortunately, the trash was to have been removed but wasn't. Joyce and
 I
removed several cans worth of trash. It really wasn't that tough, we
simply bring one or two bags and empty a can into them. We then walk
 to a
spot and deposit it. Not something all that difficult. Fortunately,
 thanks
to the help of Morning Star and Sorrel, this problem has been
 eradicated.
We now have marked containers for refuse, now it is a matter of
utilizing these correctly, taking them to their appropriate place of
deposit and taking responsibility for what we bring to and leave at the
Space. So please take your trash or someone else's with you and look
 upon
it as the Space's belated holiday gift to you.

Unfortunately trash is a fairly common problem, so please always take a
little trash with you when you leave the Space. At least our garbage
 is
real, unlike the rest of the media who simply make theirs up.

6) Back Room

Unfortunately, we have received a great many donations some of which
 would
have been better off in a dumpster. It takes up space and prevents
 use,
at some point we need to have a yard sale for a great deal of it and a
visit to the trash for the rest. There is enough stuff in the back for
 a
decent yard sale, especially with a few items added by nice
 contributors.
It could bring us some funds for things on our wish list. Also, if
 someone
could provide a van or truck, refuse removal could be readily
 completed.

We could truly be a major community asset if the back were made
 available
for film and performance activities since it is a larger space while
 the
front is available for organizational and creative functions.

7) Event usage

The Space is available to be rented for special events. Unfortunately,
there are now footprints on the newly painted walls. This occurred
 during
a special event. Had the organizer of the event who took responsibility
for the use of the Space simply taken a towel and cleaner it could
 have
been remedied. However, frequently this type of lack of respect and
responsibly occurs, so perhaps a higher deposit is required with Space
rentals.

Hope you get a chance to consider what you are willing to contribute.
