Helen Garan- "Shikoku Pilgrimage: 88 Temple Pilgrimage Tour" Tuesday, 16
June 2009
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
*Organizer:* Sierra Club Susquehanna Group
*Organizer Email:*
Helena Garan just completed this pilgrimage and is home and ready to talk
about it at the June 16 general meeting. This 800-mile hike follows the
footsteps of Kobo Daishi, one of the most well-known figures in Japanese and
Buddhist history. He is accredited with the founding of the Shikoku
pilgrimage in the 8th century. The temples only punctuate the pilgrimage;
they do not consist of it, she explains. Helena's memories are of the
extremely helpful people she encountered, the food, the smell of incense,
the 6 am chanting ceremonies in the temples, the Japanese guest houses, the
hot bath that takes away all the muscle pain at the end of the day, the
mountains, the Pacific coast, the Seto Inland Sea, the cherry blossoms, etc.
It was important to Helena to pay her respect to the cities of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, where in 1945, the first and second atomic bombs were dropped by
the United States. Come to the June 16 general meeting at Central United
Methodist Church, Endicott, to hear more.
