"Tony's sister Veronica , cunningly using the code " v.g""
Ive never met Tony actually, in fact as far as Im aware Ive never met any of you. And my name isnt Veronica. Im reacting to the emails coming through from the bimc mailing list in the past couple of weeks.
Kyra, I can see why you're being defensive. But you misunderstand me on a couple of points - the main one being the Katherine Gunn/Dr Kelly comment - I was comparing their whistle blowing to Tony Gs revealing of emails he'ld been sent. He is not obliged to keep abusive emails private on the request of his attacker, Im sure Ian hasnt obtained a signature on a BIMC secrets act... so I dont think Ian or his defenders have a leg to stand on when they slag off Tony G for sharing the emails. Like I said before, if you dont want people to know you said it, Dont Say It. Its pretty simple. As for whether Tony Gs been abusive to Ian in the past - well thats where it is, in the past. If Ian wanted to argue about it then he shouldve done it then. In the past few weeks, like I said before, on this mailing list Tony G has been extremely polite, if occasionally sarcastic, whereas Ian has been rude and insulting. I have found a few of his comments extremely offensive and unnecessary. Yet I
have read your messages to Tony 'telling him off' for his language, with no reason as far as I can see, and not a single admonishment of Ian who actually has been offensive. You aren't being fair, but apparently you cant see it. You cant attack Tony for things he said and did last year while simultaneously ignoring the things Ian is publicly saying now. Take a step outside the long term argument and try to see what a newbie sees - this situation looks like unfair ganging up on Tony while he tries to politely understand whats happening. Ive seen him ask several questions to better defend himself, but none of you seem willing to answer or clear things up. The persistent attacks on his links to sites you dont agree with are pathetic - BIMC is supposed to be about expression and news for everyone not just the views of a little clique running it. If you're all going to attack Tony Gs opinions (even when he has stated time and time again he doesnt necessarily agree with these sites,
just finds them interesting, which is completely understandable) then I suggest BIMC is being completely dishonest about its representation of everyone, and you should change the sites description to "Read it, Write It (but we might hide/censor your views), Your Site (controlled by a small clique), Your Views (but only if we agree with them)".
If you or anyone else in the whole Indymedia system has a problem with Tony or anyone else, it should be promptly dealt with there and then by discussion and swift conclusion. Some of you complain about Tony Gs links on his sites, some of us think he can link to whatever the hell he wants. I dont like the fact he links to pro father anti mother sites (it'll be angryharry next), but its up to him if he wishes to do so. If you dont like it, politely request him to stop and tell him why, and maybe he can explain to you why you're wrong. If you cant reach the same decision, tough, we all think differently and thats supposed to be part of what BIMC is about. If we disagree then we can debate the subject, but to expect everyone to agree with you ruins the whole point of BIMC. I dont know much about Tony G 'representing' Indymedia, but the uproar about the Tom Rintoul article is even more laughable than the article itself. This 'representation' thing can be resolved pretty quickly by
group discussion and conclusion, with a set way of dealing with it/punishment for anyone who breaks the rules, for example you could set a number of weeks of 'suspension' from the group or whatever. That is a fair punishment (as long as everyone knows the rules and punishments), and gives the wrongdoers the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me though. But between you and Ian you're doing a grand job of making BIMC look like a nasty little clique that is completely unaccepting of anyone with even vaguely different points of view.
