<p>Yesterday we learned that among the hundreds of protesters arrested in Minsk was our friend and colleague Aleksandr Feduta, philologist and critic, author of dozens of books and articles on Belorussian, Polish and Russian literatures and a man who has worked tirelessly to promote active and productive relations among these cultures. We are aware that the Belorussian authorities are unlikely to heed our voices, but we cannot remain silent and not intercede for our colleague and those who struggle his the same cause. We hope that Russian and western scholars in the humanities, artists and journalists will share our hopes, support our protest and sign the following letter:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;There have been mass arrests in Belarus of members of the political opposition and of people who simply dared to think and act independently&mdash;literary scholars, those in the arts, journalists and scholars. In particular, among those arrested and who are still in prison (the list is by no means complete) are:</p>
<p>Slavomir Adamovich, poet;</p>
<p>Vadim Aleksandrovich, journalist;</p>
<p>Aleksandr Astafyev, journalist;</p>
<p>Dmitry Bondarenko, journalist;</p>
<p>Sergei Voznyak, journalist;</p>
<p>Nikita Volodzko, actor;</p>
<p>Dmitry Galko, journalist;</p>
<p>Oleg Gulak, civil rights activist;</p>
<p>Vadim Zamirovsky, journalist;</p>
<p>Natalya Kolyada, theatre director;</p>
<p>Vladimir Neklyaev, writer (former candidate for president of Belarus);</p>
<p>Anatoly Pavlov, former vice-president of Belarus State University;</p>
<p>Andrei Pochobut, journalist;</p>
<p>Aleksei Saley, journalist;</p>
<p>Dmitry Savka, linguist;</p>
<p>Denis Tarasenko, actor;</p>
<p>Irina Khalip, journalist;</p>
<p>Aleksandr Feduta, literary historian and journalist;</p>
<p>Vladimir Shcherban, director.</p>

<p>We believe that beatings and arrests are not a valid means of solving political differences and therefore we emphatically protest the arbitrary measures imposed by the authorities in the Republic of Belarus. We demand that the people whose only crime is their attempt to express their opinions in public be immediately freed and that they no longer be persecuted.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We ask the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which today personifies European democracy, along with other international bodies concerned with issues of human rights, to intervene in this situation and use all their influence to have those arrested freed.&rdquo;</p>
