What Progressives have in Common with the Military
It might be hard to believe, but today's progressives have a lot in
common with the military. In “Love the Warrior, Hate the War,” In
These Times’ contributing writer Lorelei Kelly details the surprising
ways that the "values" of the progressive and military worlds
intersect. Kelly, director of the Real Security Initiative at the
White House Project. writes that by working together, the two could
make dramatic strides towards keeping the peace.
Beyond similar objectives, such as the preservation of International
Human Rights Law and AIDS prevention, “many members of the military
and progressives are philosophically much closer than either believes
and they are both hurt by the lack of meaningful interaction," Kelly
writes. "Understanding and aligning with the military around shared
concerns could be a crucial new strategy for the left."
The military also needs allies who know how to put pressure on
elected officials. “Despite their ability to wield tremendous
physical force, the military is vulnerable when it comes to
protecting itself in the domestic policy process.”
“Love the Warrior” also explores the ways that military perspectives
can further the progressive cause. “Hearing what the military has to
say could give liberals a reality-tested idea around which to unify:
that our left-over Cold War belief in dominance alone is obsolete and
that we need new, far-reaching alternatives,” Kelly writes.
