Learn to tell your story at a CMW workshop

“When I went to my first [CMW] workshop, I had no real understanding
of how to work with the media,” says Michael Pollock, vice president
of external affairs at mental health services provider Thresholds. “I
went in feeling very green.”

Pollock was exposed to local journalists who wanted to hear his story.
“I gave one of the reporters at the workshop my contact information,
and later she called me to set up an interview with our CEO for a
story,” he said. Contacts he made at the workshop also helped spark a
couple of additional stories on WBEZ, the local public radio outlet.

“[CMW] has really helped take away some of the mystery of dealing with
the media,” he said. “It’s really not as scary as I thought it would
be.”

Workshops currently scheduled include:

Present Like a Pro: Public Speaking Basics 9/19

Whether to present, persuade, or both, standing before a group of

People to Pitch

Sun-Times editorial page editor
Cheryl Reed

The Sun-Times named Cheryl Reed, most recently books editor, to run
the editorial section (Steve Huntley, former editor, is now writing a
column). She announced July 10 she's "reconceiving" the editorial
pages and returning them to their "liberal, working-class roots." We
caught up with her to find out more:
What's different on the Sun-Times editorial board?

We're trying to make the editorial board more modern, more diverse and
make the members a reflection of the city. We want another Latino
writer, another African-American. I hope to make the editorial pages
more engaging, provocative. We want to look at issues and be more
progressive and write about issues that we think people in Chicago
care about. More with the concerns of everyday, average people who
live in the city.
Who's new?

Well, it's only my second week, so I'm still interviewing. But we've
totally redesigned the section. We now have illustrators. We're also
pushing people on staff to be more opinionated. We're looking at doing
signed editorials. You'll have a sense of who's writing what. We're
expanding more avenues for people to talk back. We're eventually going
to do a blog. We're really trying to make this a contemporary
commentary section that will engage modern readers.
Do you think you can make a difference?

Yes, and I think that is what was appealing to me about taking this
job. I had been an investigative reporter. The people we are hoping to
acquire for the board, I'm hoping will be very strong reporters.
What audience are you trying to reach?

People who are in the city or work in the city and are concerned about
it, who have a core love and concern for the city and what's going to
happen to it.
