News and notes from our Making Media Connections conference
Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune: “We’re looking for the smaller story
that’s able to grab people.”
Vanessa Hall, Telemundo: “If a pitch is too long, I lose my train of
thought, or get distracted—please be precise and quick with pitches.”
Craig Dellimore, WBBM AM 780: “The most effective pitches have
something to do with what’s going on these days. Our bosses are always
telling ust o localize the issues, so a good rule of thumb is to take
what problem your group solves and wait until that problem becomes big
news.”
Nearly 100 presenters from news outlets and nonprofits talked about
pitching, marketing, polling, and other communications-related topics
at this year’s Making Media Connections. All in all we had about 300
people registered for both days.

Community Media Summit success
Members of WTTW and Chicago Public Radio advisory boards gathered at
their first-ever joint meeting.
To give full justice to the way the new media/tech is changing how we
tell stories about our work and our communities this year we held a
Community Media Summit, as well. More than 100 turned out from Chicago
and across the Midwest for our event, co-sponsored with the Benton
Foundation.
One highlight was Julia Stasch’s presentation of a new report “The
City That Networks,” whose key recommendations include the idea that
Chicago “launch a sustained Campaign for Digital Excellence to become
a city that continually takes advantage of digital technologies and
opportunities.”
