FEATURES
"Showdown" by Adam Doster
Although the Udalls are jokingly called "the Kennedys of the West,"
most Americans have never heard of this political family that
traverses four generations. That's about to change. Three Udall
cousins are running for the Senate, two as Democrats and one as a
Republican. If the two Democrats win and the Republican loses, the
Democratic Party will be within reach of a filibuster-proof majority
in the Senate.
"Blue Collar, Bare Cupboards" by Sasha Abramsky
Food pantries have long served the chronically unemployed and the
homeless. But due to stagnating wages and the rising cost of living,
a different group is increasingly showing up at food banks: the working
poor. Pantries, already stretched because of massive cuts in federal
aid and reductions in private contributions, are struggling to feed
the swelling ranks of the hungry working poor.
"The Upside of Nationalism" by David Sirota
American nationalism - the politics of putting America first - can
be reactionary, as immigrant bashing shows. On the other hand,
American nationalism can be progressive by combining economic
nationalism with populism. Progressive nationalism condemns
treaties, policies, and business practices that benefit elites at the
expense of ordinary U.S. workers. It also opposes - as a threat to
national security - allowing foreign governments to invest heavily in
critical sectors of the U.S. economy.
"Obamanomics" by David Moberg
Obama's economic policies, although still being refined, seem more
centrist than progressive. But if elected, Obama may shift to the
left for two reasons. First, Obama risks alienating his progressive
supporters if he cleaves to centrist policies. Second, centrist
policies are too feeble to address the economic disasters that
Obama will inherit from Bush.
"Recruiting Spies in the Peace Corps" by Jean Friedman-Rudovsky
A U.S. embassy official in Bolivia asked Peace Corps volunteers to
report on any Cubans they encounter in Bolivia. The U.S. embassy
and the State Department later said the request was a mistake and
a violation of U.S. policy. But six months after the first request, the
same U.S. official allegedly asked a Fulbright scholar to spy on
Cubans and Venezuelans in Bolivia. These incidents are part of a
disturbing pattern of recent U.S. meddling in Bolivian affairs.
PLUS:
"Shape Up and Ship Out" by John Cavanagh, Anita Dancs, and Miriam
Pemberton
How the Pentagon can cut the U.S. defense budget and still keep us
safe.
"Beyond Propaganda" by Michael Moreci
Oil giant BP greenwashes Alberta tar sands.
"Caricaturing Danish Muslims" by Jacob Wheeler
Religious bias figures prominently in the election defeat of a
progressive Muslim woman in Denmark.
"Kenya's Indy Media" by Michelle Chen
Bloggers, cartoonists, and guerrilla radio activists rock the East
African mediascape.
