London Indymedia has been chronicling developments across the UK on
November 24, 2010 -- the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts, an
effort against tuition raises and funding cuts among UK schools.
Actions include massive student walkouts, banner drops, marches, and

Counter-responses by police and schools include street closures,
arrests, and mass academic suspensions. A follow-up day of action is
scheduled for November 30th.

*60,000 Argentina marchers protest murder of activist student*
http://argentina.indymedia.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=6092&category_id=34
Argentina Indymedia reported about a massive protest march over the
killing of a student active in left politics. On October 21, 2010,
Mariano Ferreyra, a student active with the Workers Party, was killed in
a amidst a labor dispute of railway workers. Argentina Indymedia
reported that on October 22, some 60,000 people marched in Buenos Aires
to the Plaza de Mayo, the main square in Buenos Aires, to condem the
killing. The report also quoted a representative of the Workers Party
who accused a group of "thugs" associated with a rival union syndicate
who wanted to avoid a labor struggle and resorted to a crime.

*Puerto Rican journalists rally for freedom of the press against
influential Puerto Rican
*http://pr.indymedia.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=1308&category_id=1
Puerto Rico Indymedia featured a story of Puerto Rican journalists who
rallied for press freedom against an influential Puerto Rican. On
November 3rd, two organizations -- the Association of Journalists of
Puerto Rico, and the Overseas Press Club -- urged the broadcaster
Univision to resist efforts by Wando Rolon who is suing Univision for
defamation. A Puerto Rican journalist, Yolanda Velez Arcelay, reported
in October on the partisan grants of religious leaders. Rolon is a
leader of the Tabernacle of Praise and Restoration of the Old Footpath,
a religious evangelical organization.

*Ex-Colombia president served subpoena over possible paramilitary ties
*http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/150322/index.php
A DC Indymedia feature of November 11, 2010, reported on a successful
action against an infamous ex-head-of-state. In early November,
students at Georgetown University successfully served a subpoena to
former Colombian president Alvaro Uribe to testify about possible
paramilitary ties. The Adios Uribe Coalition has campaigned since
September to urge Georgetown to drop Uribe as a "distinguished
scholar". The subpoena now requires Uribe to testify in a case against
the Drummond Mining Company, a coal company reputed to have colluded
with the Columbian Armed Forces to murder, torture, and disappear
opponents of Drummond. The president of Drummond in Colombia, Augusto
Jimenez, is a distant relative of Alvaro Uribe.

*Indigenous spiritual leader detained in Houston over psychoactive drug,
later freed
*http://houston.indymedia.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=1341&category_id=1
Houston Indymedia featured the report of an indigenous spiritual healer
who was detained in Houston International Airport for carrying
traditional medicine. On October 19, 2010, Taita Juan Agreda Chindoy
was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for carrying the
traditional medicine Ayahuasca, a psychoactive brew. Because the brew
contained a hallucinogenic compound, it was classified as a "Schedule 1
Drug" and Taita Juan faced up to twenty years in prison. But a campaign
to support Taita Juan, including a website freetaitajuan.org, rallied to
his support and on November 16th, all criminal charges against Taita
Juan were dropped.

*Leaked newsletter reveals Pennsylvania-based spying of animal rights
activists
*http://phillyimc.org/en/leaked-newsletters-reveal-pa-based-spying-animal-rights-activists
Philadelphia IMC featured a report about leaked newsletters which
revealed Pennsylvania-based spying on animal rights activists. The
website Voice of the Voiceless posted leaked copies of a newsletter
called Extremist Watch published by the private intelligence firm
Information Network Associates, and intended for animal researchers and
law enforcement. The newsletters were based heavily on monitoring of
the websites and Facebook profiles of various animal-rights groups,
offering a calendar of "extremist" events like outdoor vegetarian
festivals and supposed "intelligence" of so-called "direct action
trends", even publishing the home addresses of various animal-rights
activists.

*California healthcare workers walkout against expected layoffs
*http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/10/27/18662472.php
Santa Cruz Indymedia featured a healthcare workers walkout against
hospital management over the impact of expected layoffs. Quoting from
the feature: More than 100 healthcare workers marched outside Salinas
Valley Memorial Hospital on October 21st to draw attention to the
potential impacts of layoffs and employee buyouts ordered by hospital
management. Employees voted to stage the picket by 97%. One
technician, Nina Perez, explained the impact: "Cutting jobs means
cutting healthcare for our community. When they eliminate this many
staff, patients and their families are going to see the difference.
Caregivers are already stretched too thin."

*Trial begins of Minneapolis police charged in wrongful death shooting
*http://twincities.indymedia.org/2010/oct/trial-police-charged-2006-shooting-begins
Twin Cities Indymedia featured the opening of a trial of Minneapolis
police charged in a 2006 shooting. Dominic Felder, a 27-year-old
African-American resident of Minneapolis and father of two, was killed
by white Minneapolis police officers Jason King and Lawrence Loonsfoot.
Felder, who suffered from an unspecified mental illness, experienced a
paranoid episode on September 20, 2006; Felder turned away from the
police but then returned and even demonstrated that he was unarmed,
though police allege that he tried to grab an officer's gun to justify
their shooting. Each of the two officers have been involved with
shootings of African-Americans victims in the past. The trial's launch
coincided with the National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality, on
October 22, 2010.

*Follow-up of previous Chicago Indymedia features
*And two follow-ups from previous Chicago Indymedia stories. In
September, we reported on videographer Gregory Koger, who was found
guilty and convicted without bond on three charges of videorecording a
lecture event whose speaker had been suddenly disinvited. From the
Chicago Indymedia newswire: "The Appellate Court of Illinois has granted
Gregory Koger's motion for bond pending appeal, and Gregory was released
from the Cook County Jail. In accepting the motion, the Court
acknowledges the fact that Gregory is not a flight risk, that he is not
a 'danger to the community,' and furthermore that his appeal raises
substantial questions of law or fact 'likely to result in reversal or a
new trial'." And also in September Chicago Indymedia featured the
Whittier School sit-in to protect a school fieldhouse from being
demolished. On the sit-in's 43rd day, the Whittier Parent Committee
ended the sit-in after the Chicago Public Schools agreed in principle to
meet the Committee's demands, though full details of the agreement have
yet to be finalized. The committee emphasized that their defense of the
fieldhouse will continue despite the sit-in's conclusion.
