"I mean the only liberty which is truly worthy of the name, the liberty
which consists in the full development of all the material, intellectual and
moral powers which are to be found as faculties latent in everybody, the
liberty which recognizes no other restrictions than those which are traced
for us by the laws of our own nature; so that properly speaking there are no
restrictions, since these laws are not imposed on us by some outside
legislator, beside us or above us; they are immanent in us, inherent,
constituting the very basis of our being" - Mikhail Bakunin

Tonight (Wednesday, 7th July) at the WEA, there's going to be a
submission-writing session targetting the government's foreshore and seabed
legislation. Closing date for the submissions is the 12th, so this may be
your last chance to sit down and do one. Starting at 7pm, we hope to be
finished by 8. Information about the foreshore and seabed legislation will
be provided, along with assistance in writing a submission. The legislation
is being created to negate a Court of Appeal decision allowing Ngati Apa to
pursue a claim in the Maori Land Court. The government was a party to that
court case; so they are basically making legislation to get their way in a
case that they lost in the Court of Appeal.

Oppose this legislation: take an hour out of your time to tell the
government what you think. Those who wish to write a submission in favour of
the legislation are certainly welcome to do so, but not at tonight's
workshop.

"The Price of Power and the need for Deprivatisation of Electricity"

Forum organised by the Alliance Party (Canterbury Branch)

The Alliance has a campaign to deprivatise the electricity system and
remove the capitalistic market mechanism from pricing and planning. Our
electricity system must be democratically controlled by the people of
Aotearoa New Zealand and serve as a collective public good! Under
Labour, the electricity system is still dictated to by the heartless
free market, and the unequal distribution of electricity (largely due to
cost and huge income disparity) continues to perpetuate social
inequality and poverty.

Speakers at the Forum:

Dr Sue Newberry:
Sue is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Canterbury.
Her research interests have been in the area of accounting in NOT FOR
PROFIT organisations and accounting in the public sector. Her critical
analysis of accounting practices in recent public sector reforms has
made her aware of how badly these function for the public good and how
easily they are exploited for anti-social ends.

John Noble:
John is an engineer who has specialised in energy supply for the past 20
years. He is on Grey Power's energy committee and has recently had
articles published in Unlimited Magazine, The Independent, The Energy
File and The Press. John will report on how the New Right's energy
reforms have negatively impacted on the elderly.

Jim Lamb:
Jim is the co-ordinator of the Beneficiary Advisory Service in
Christchurch. He will talk about how the market reforms in the
electricity sector, like other New Right reforms, have been most
negatively felt by those on benefits and low incomes.

The seminar will be facilitated by Dr Dave Palmer, the Alliance's Energy
Spokesperson.

Format of Seminar:
Each speaker will speak for 15-20 minutes, a panel question and answer
session will follow (30 minutes), then a brainstorm/planning and
discussion session, followed by afternoon tea.

JOIN THE FIGHT AND RETURN THE POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
