[Imc-cleveland] regional newspaper

Hi Abigail and others,

That's cool. Thanks for the questions. AFSC does not have to be THE
organization doing this; in fact, we'd probably like just being one of the
contributing groups. But, right now, we're happy to help out where we can.

Regarding AFSC's politics: the organization actually can't endorse candidates,
although it can participate in non-candidate oriented electoral campaigns
(usually this only extends to things like the minimum wage, single payer health
care, campaign finance reform, etc.) AFSC also does have a position on
nonviolence (not the same as "pacifism", though, I'd say), but the organization
has never allowed this to prevent it from working with groups that have taken
other positions on the use of violence (within certain reasonable limits, which
I doubt other IMCers would disagree with... like the military, fascists, etc.).
There are people on the committee with a wide-range of views (as with people
who participate generally with the AFSC). Personally, I am not a pacifist and
believe in the right to self-defense (including violence), but I prioritize and
always prefer the use of nonviolent action whenever possible. AFSC and the IMC
have had a good relationship so far, I think, but it's good to bring up these
questions!

We thought the nice thing about a collectively produced newsletter from many
different groups is that we could combine news/ideas from a variety of
perspectives (even we don't always agree on every little thing) that work
towards that better world we'd like to see. A newspaper might even be a nice
venue for the debate of certain issues like the ones Andy raised. It might be
good (at some point) to consider some guidelines on what type of group would
fit within a newsletter and what wouldn't. Clearly facists wouldn't, but what
groups would be fuzzy? The Green Party? Left-leaning religious-inspired groups?
Armed struggle formations (if any even exist in NEOhio)? Etc.

Okay, sorry about the rambles.... What's the next step, ya'll?

Cheers,
D
