I know this is certainly a discussion that has been happening quite a
bit recently. I also have seen a pretty exciting exposition (admittedly
from someone involved in Twitter) of using XMPP for content distribution
for just the aims you outlined.

A holy war no doubt, but not one that I've seen played out much. Are
either a good idea?

And I know this is a daft question, but bear with me, how does this fit
with the Distributed CMS idea. I know the projects can work in parallel,
but will the object nature of the 'published-things' make all this
easier, should the design of the two be integrated?
