+++ summary: new idea for the global page +++ information about
indymedia like cases of repression but also more to be collected on an
'indymedia information center' web page +++
hi,
with the information about yet another case of repression against a
local imc (italy) i'd like to try to start something that's been on my
mind for a while.
== what ==
during the ahimsa seizure there was a static page (a page that can only
be changed by page administrators) with information on the seizure, the
indymedia press releases etc: http://www.indymedia.org/fbi/. this was
originally set up when imc seattle had legal trouble.
this was updated by the ad hoc ahimsa press group which dissolved when
the attention on the seizure faded.
during that time it was mentioned that it would be nice to have a 'press
room' page with information for journalists. i didn't like the idea (the
name) then because i think we're media ourselves and so who is 'the
press' then?
but what i do think is missing is a page with updated information for
everyone - on the different cases of repression against imc's and other
important things happening. maybe not just negative things but also
announcements of special actions or successful things we do (e.g. i once
heard rumors about a radio done by imc estrecho/madiaq across
the mediterranean sea both in europe and africa and thought this is
something really worth telling - i think there are many such examples).
anything worth doing something like a 'press release' or newsletter or
any type of special announcement about.
== where ==
this kind of information should be easily available on a page
linked directly from the global page www.indymedia.org.
it could be linked from the start page either as something like
'Indymedia Information' or 'Indymedia Information Center', or just
simply as the 'about us' page. is anyone working on that? the one we
have looks a bit like a work in progress?
== how ==
assuming that most imc's who have had legal trouble have this
information collected somewhere the easy way would be to link to
that, maybe with a little summary of what happened.
i'm also thinking of a collection of links pointing to coverage of major
actions like summits, protests against nuclear waste transports or water
privatisation, factory occupations, pga conferences etc. etc. . i think
most imc's have 'their' big actions summarized in a big feature and so
it shouldn't be too complicated to gather this information.
as long as there is only me there is no point in starting a new mailing
list ;). but as soon as more people take part there will be one, and
it'll obviously be announced on these same lists: communication,
process, legal, global features - and other suggestions?. so far i
propose that discussion about this idea should take place on
imc-communication only. please don't cc all four lists.
i would like to start with this soon and i'd really prefer to not stay
by myself.
if however anyone has objections against this project please say so and
preferably propose how to do it differently.
== who ==
i have been asking around for a while whether anyone was interested in
doing this but it seems most people are really busy with local things -
which is good! - and don't have the time. so i'm asking again whether
anyone would like to help, maybe just with little things like forwarding
information or pointing out where to find older things?
if you have suggestions about what else should be there or how to do it
or who to contact or anything else but don't want to participate or
commit to anything new: send an email or find me on irc
(chat.indymedia.org #communication) please!
