there've been a few messages on these lists in recent months about the uk
getting a new server with funds from the server appeal fund, set up after the
ahimsa siezure almost 2 years ago.
we've essentially decided that we are going to get a server to host in the uk,
and that in the short term it will be used to help sort out traven (the uk mir
publish server) but the longer term uses have not yet been finalised.
one thought is that the server could be used as a new mir server, for hosting
sites from outside the uk. another thought is that it could provide a platform
for a number of different services - for example, run vservers and have newly
developed imc applications, an irc host, maybe a backup of the wiki, etc, all
running on it.
we have decided to try and include input from others in this discussion:
particularly, the participants of the traven lists , as imcs who may wish to
be hosted on the new server; also, participants at some of the international
tech camps this summer, such as the pga meeting in france .
we would are also thinking of setting up another server, in an overseas location
other than the uk or usa - as yet, to be decided. we would be grateful for
suggestions of where this could be hosted and offers of input and collaborative
working. we hope to discuss this, too, with others.
please feel free to comment on these ideas: they are not fixed in stone yet, and
we'd like to benefit the network in the best ways we can. the best list for
discussion is imc-uk-process but we will try our best to follow-up replies
