Hi Brett,

so as you receive at least -some- response on time, I'm forwarding the
discussion which has developed from your inquiry. You can continue to
follow this discussion thread (which may expand until the 11th) on the
imc-communcation mailing list archives at
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-communication/

Summing this up, at this point, I would say that

- - it is unlikely that you will ever get a lawful permission by anyone to
use this image in a publication

- - I do not expect that anyone would attempt to enforce legal terms on
you should you decide to use this image without written consent by
whoever would need to grant it, if anyone.

Please know exactly what you're writing about when mentioning Indymedia.
People consider Indymedia an idea, a project and a collective, but not
an organisation.
http://www.indymedia.org/en/static/about.shtml
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/PrinciplesOfUnity

The ((i)) Indymedia image can be found in several different variations
and qualities at
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/ImcDesign
  and
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/ImcDesignLogoVariations

I think people would appreciate it very much if you were able to make an
electronic copy of either the complete handbook or the part of it which
refers to Indymedia available to the general public (whom creates
Indymedia).

All of what I wrote above is my personal conception, not the one of
Indymedia as a whole, as this would require a global discussion which
involves all Indymedia centers, and a consensus making process which may
be lengthy, surely taking longer than the time you are able to spend on
the preparations of the book.

Thanks Alster.

At first glance this is almost exclusively US-oriented, far more focused
on environmetal than on socio-political issues, and very close to
indymedia's open ethos.

On the other hand, there may not be too much too offensive about it, and
it may indeed be a publication read by some people who would go on from
there to look more closely at what indymedia tries to do.

If the editors had really looked into what indymedia is and how it
works, they'd have realised that we would need more information and time
to try to take such a decision.

Bottom line: I for one would probably be in favour of letting them print
the basic logo, whether it requires 'formal' permission or not (isn't it
more of a 'no-logo'?). But I also doubt that the collectives would be
able to agree to that in the time available.
