This post concerns an invitation we are making  to all the indymedia local
groups to screen a feature documentary film called "i" about the indymedia
movement. I would appreciate it if you could help this go out to the proper
place. I know posting by a non indymedia group is not common, but I imagine
that this is an important exception. (ENGLISH THEN SPANISH)

Hello Indymedia! This Is Raphael Lyon and Andres Ingoglia.
We are happy to tell you that we have finished our feature documentary
about Indymedia called simply "i".
 
It is an ambitious project that covers several continents and has taken
almost 4 years to complete. The film has been called a "Tornado" by the NY
Indypendent and Naomi Klein says "Beautiful, intellectual, riotous... Just
go see it!"
 
It has always been our plan to take the distribution of the film as
seriously as an experiment as the film itself- and while we are currently
booking a conventional speaking tour we want to make sure that anyone,
indymedia or not- who wants to host a screening anywhere can get a hold of
the film at little or no upfront cost.
 
Toward this end we have come up with the idea of "Decentralized" or "DIY
screenings." It is our belief that by pooling our resources together we can
make this project sustainable and a model for future global distribution.
  
The idea is that we send out the film for free- hosts which would like to,
ask for a donation at the door. We encourage the use of the film as a
fundraising opportunity for the local IMCs and social movements. We are
asking that some of those funds to be returned to us to so that we can
afford to send the film out to smaller towns and places in the global south
that would like to screen it.
 
November 30th is coming up soon- and it seems like a perfect moment to
schedule the beginning of these DIY screenings. Below you will find more
information about  us and the film.- but in the meantime check out the

-Who are we?
Andres is a native of Buenos Aires Argentina, Raphael is a native of
Providence Rhode Island. Though we are not directly a part of indymedia, we
consider ourselves supporters and sympathizers.  This film is our take on
the movement, especially how it manifested itself in Argentina during the
crisis period and represents our particular perspective. We have not
received any corporate grants, or even any large non profit grants.
Everything was paid out of pocket-
however we have made the film a creative commons "copy left" project.
  
"i" the DVD-
The DVD is a special DVD9 meaning it contains almost 9 gigabytes of
material. Beyond the film itself there are a series of archival footage and
interviews that are critical to understanding the history of indymedia but
did not make sense to put in a film which is somewhat abstract and avoids
telling any definitive stories about the network as a whole. The film so far
has been subtitled in over 9 languages and contains both English and Spanish
audio tracks. (Subtitles include English, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese,
German, Korean, Indonesian, Finnish and French) (greek is on its way))

-Why didn't we just put the film on line for free download?
 
There are two main reasons for this.
Firstly, at least in the short term we have decided that making the film
available for download encourages people to watch this film, at home- alone
on the computer. We feel that the importance of making of film is to bring
together people in a physical setting in a group. This is why we have
decided to do the DIY screenings which focuses on building audiences rather
than just simply making the film available "for free." which really means
"For free if you own a computer, the latest software and a high speed line."
Our experiment, we hope, in the long run will be more democratic.

Hola Indymedia! Somos Raphael Lyon y Andrés Ingoglia. Les informamos con
mucha alegra que terminamos el documental acerca de Indymedia al que
llamammos simplemente ³i²


Es un proyecto ambicioso que abarca varios continentes y nos ha llevado más
de 4 años de trabajo. La película ha sido descipta como ³un tornado² por el
periodico The NY Indypendent. Naomi Klein la califico como ³bella,
intellectual y desenfrenada. ¡Simplemente véanla!"
 
Durante todo el camino nuestro plan de distribución del film ha sido
enfocado como un experimento. De la misma manera en que la película también
lo ha sido. En este momento estamos de gira con el film por los EEUU y
Europa y queremos asegurarnos de que cualquiera -Indymedia o no- que quiera
organizar una proyección en algun lugar del mundo tenga acceso a una copia.

Con respecto a esto último es que se nos ocurrió algo que llamamos
³Proyecciones Descentralizadas² ó ³haga usted su propia proyeccion². Creemos
que compartiendo los recursos que tenemos entre todxs podemos hacer que este
proyecto sea sustentable y que su vez sirva como modelo para otros proyectos
que necesiten de una futura distribución global.


La idea es enviarles la película gratis a todxs. Aquellos organizadorxs que
cobren una entrada/contribución, por favor enviennos algo de dinero. Esa
suma nos posibilitará enviar la película a pueblos y ciudades en el sur
global, ya que de otra forma no podrían pagar para que les llegue la copia.


El 30 de noviembre se acerca y nos pareció un momento ideal para lanzar las
³proyecciones descentralizadas². Más abajo podrán encontrar más información
acerca de nosotros y de la película. Mientras tanto miren el trailer del

¿Quiénes somos?
Andres nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Raphael es de Providence, Rhode
Island, en los EEUU. Si bien no estamos directamente relacionados con
Indymedia, apoyamos y nos solidarizamos con el proyecto. Esta es nuestra
visión sobre el movimiento, especialmente en el modo en que se manifestó en
la Argentina durante el período de crisis del 2001. Y representa nuestra
perspectiva personal. No hemos recibido ninguna beca, ni apoyo económico de
ningún tipo para hacer este film. Hemos pagado todo de nuestro propio
bolsillo. A pesar de esto, decidimos lanzar el film bajo la bandera de
³creative commons²: cualquiera que quiera utilizar la película puede hacerlo
siempre y cuando cite la fuente y no sea utilizada con fines de lucro.
 

El DVD de ³i²
Este DVD es una edición especial en DVD9. Esto significa que contine casi 9
gigabites de material. Además de la película en sí misma, hemos incluído una
serie de material de archivo y entrevistas que son de suma importancia para
entender la historia de Indymedia. Lo hicimos así porque no tenía sentido
incluir toda esta información en la película, ya que el film es bastante
abstracto e intenta eludir historias particulares que enbloban a la red con
una visión unica. Hasta ahora el film ha sido subtitulado en 9 idiomas y
contiene voces en off en inglés y en español. Los subtítulos están en
inglés, español, holandés, potugués, alemán, coreano, indonesio, finlandés y
francés. Son bienvenidas otras traducciones en todos aquellos idiomos a los
que todavía no hemos traducido la película. ¡Sólo contáctense con nosotros!
 
¿Por qué no pusimos la película en la internet para bajarla gratuitamente?


Hay dos razones importantes. Primero, en el corto plazo, nos pareció que
poner el film en la internet para que la gente lo baje gratuitamente, iba a
propiciar que muchas personas lo vean solos en sus casas frente a sus
computadoras. Sentimos que el proposito de hacer una película es tartar de
que las personas se acerquen unas a otras en un mísmo espacio físico y como
un grupo de individuos. Es por esto que hemos decidido hacer lo que llamamos
las proyecciones descentralizadas que se basan en tratar de construir
audiencias en vez de solamente hacer que el film esté disponible
gratuitamente. Esto uliutmo sólo significa que es gratis si se tiene una
computadora, un software muy actualizado y una conexion a internet muy
rápida. Esperamos que nuestro experimento sea en el largo plazo más
democrático.
