Hi,
some of you have already realized that a change has taken place about
the docs.indymeida.org server + site. Here's a small update:
To be able to better sort out the problems the 'kompost' server has been
experiencing in the past, the server has now been removed from the
colocation and is now connected via a DSL line in a place where the
actual server is well accessible. The goal is to have better access to
the hardware, which is also meant to allow for rebooting it faster than
in the past.
A lot of changes have been made to the configuration of the operating
system which are meant to improve the stability of the server (and thus
the stability of the docs.indymedia.org website). We don't know whether
this will ultimatively work, yet, but at least problems can be taken on
faster now.
This is not a permanent solution. However, it means an improvement in
mostly two aspects:
o the wiki is now writable again, i.e. fully functional
o downtime, if and when occurring, should now be much less than before
(while it could be just a couple minutes, and normally will be around
one or a few hours, the expected worst case for reboots would be around
24 hours). The current goal is to do a combination of fixing the
stability issues the server has had in the past, and to provide
availability. Should this not work out, there is a backup option which
we may, if time permits, also set up as a backup solution.
Due to the limitations an ADSL connection comes with, the wiki is
currently only reachable via HTTPS at
httpS://docs.indymedia.org
If you attempt to access the same host through http you will currently
end up on a different web page. This will soon be changed into a
redirection script which will forward you to httpS://docs.indymedia.org
Should this SSL-only availability cause grave problems to the usability
of the website to anyone, please notify the IMC Docs working group and
discuss this with us on out mailing list imc-docs at lists.indymedia.org.
Please note that not everything may be working as expected yet, we're
still in the process of tweaking the configuration so that it works with
the current (new) environment. Nevertheless, we'd appreciate if you
could send notifications on anything which doesn't work to the common
contact address:
mailto:docs at SOS.indymedia.org
Thanks a lot to the people who made this new setup possible and who
spent lots of time on fixing and setting things up. This mostly goes to
GdM and the (here unnamed) person who is currently providing power,
internet connectivity and a not too warm, dry, cosy place for this server.
On a side note: this email was previously sent (a few minutes ago) to
the imc-docs and imc-tech mailing lists only. I resent it to
imc-communication after being hinted that I should have done this in the
first place. Please keep in mind to hold any discussion related to the
wiki setup on the imc-docs mailing list (see above), not on
imc-communication, if you'd like to make sure the people who maintain
this server currently read it, too.
