Anna wrote me asking to send you a profile of myself. My name is Tommy
Jonsson and I'm active with Thunder Bay IMC. We're a half defunct
collective living in resource rich and job poor Northwestern Ontario.
Our work has centred around indigenous resistance to resource demands on
their land, regional political alienation, and the economic collapse of
the dying industrial region we live in. One work you might be familiar
with of ours is called "As Long as the Rivers Flow", the documentary of
the longest lasting logging blockade in North America at Grassy
Narrows. The advantage to the situation of our collective is that we
now have people all across the nation that can do outreach for the
Northwest (which led me to this list). As for me, I've been a full time
independent journalist and media activist for about 5 years and I've
been self publishing since 1996. I'm living in Montreal for the next
couple of months before I go home to launch my first book
on homelessness in Thunder Bay. Starting in May, I'm putting six months
into writing my second book while I'm freelancing for the mainstream
press up there. I speak for University classes throughout
Ontario on the role of Independent media in the overall role of media in
nurturing strong democracy...and I'm passionate about my land and my
people. I don't know what you're looking for exactly but I look forward
to seeing the collaborations this list is capable of and seeing what I
can contribute to the larger network in a complicated time. Peace,
Love, and Revolution, -Tommy.
