Normally, the only real option I can think of in a case like this is to
get in touch with the server admins of the server hosting this IMC.
Here's the process:
1. Find out which server the IMC the article was published on is hosted on.
This requires some technical understanding (*). If you don't know how to
do it yourself you can pass the URL of the article which is to be hidden
to imc-tech at lists.indymedia.org and ask which server the IMC is hosted
on and note that you want to get in touch with them to have a post
removed (do not pass the whole URL unless it was already sent to a
public mailing list).
You can also ask those questions on the Indymedia IRC network in channel
#tech: ircs://irc.indymedia.org:995/tech (it may help to explain what
makes _you_ want to find out about this).
2. As soon as you know the server name, you'll need to find out the
contact for this server. Often, this can be achieved by appending
'.indymedia.org' to the server name (i.e. 'servername' becomes
'servername.indymedia.org'), paste this into the address bar of your web
browser and go there.
But this won't always work. Another way is to look for the server name
on http://lists.indymedia.org/. This web page lists most Indymedia
mailing lists, including several IMC server related mailing lists. Most
server maintenance mailing lists are in the form 'servername-sysadmin'
(where 'servername' is replaced by the name of the server).
This isn't guaranteed to work, either, but trying both options gives you
a good chance you'll find the the right contact.
3. Contact the server admins and ask them to remove the article in
question, pointing them to the original request (or forwarding it if it
the original request is not accessible for them) and pointing out that
you were unable to contact the IMC inquestion and why so (such as: dead
IMC, no contact details available on their website etc.), as well as
asking them to get in touch with the original requestor when it's done.
Inform the original requestor and the internal IMC contacts they
initially contacted that you have passed the request on to the server
admins.
(*)
A way how you can do this yourself (but note that it doesn't always
work) is to point your web browser to
https://contact.indymedia.org/list.php and click on 'Do host lookups'.
Look for the row listing the IMC in question. In the rightmost column
('host'), the servers hostname is normally given in the very end.
If you'd like to learn more about how you can do such lookups yourself
and how to determine incorrect results and work around them, feel free
to contact me and I'll try to explain. It's not that complicated really.
Hope this helps,
Alster
