Hola, escribe este mensaje Ernesto del colectivo Indymedia Rosario, parte de
Indymedia Argentina. Hace un par de días que nos enteramos de esta situación
y empezamos a hablar al respecto.

Como colectivo Indymedia Rosario, en la reunión de hoy definimos los
siguientes puntos:

1 - Presentación del problema: hasta donde entendemos, el pedido de
subsidios fue informado al resto de la red global de Indymedia una vez
presentado a la Fundación Knight. Estamos en desacuerdo con ese proceder.
Entendemos que debería haberse informado antes, porque de esta manera nos
encontramos con un accionar de hechos consumados.

2 - Redacción del pedido de subsidio: una rápida lectura del texto de pedido
de subsidios nos deja con la sensación de que su autoría es confusa, ya que
tal cual está, parece ser un pedido realizado por la red en su conjunto,
cuando esto no es así.

3 - Trabajo pago: Al solicitarse un monto de u$s 200.000 para pagar a un
grupo de técnicos que integran algunos colectivos de Indymedia -
desconocemos quiénes son y cuáles colectivos integran - se está violando un
consenso básico de la red, según el cual el trabajo voluntario en Indymedia
no se paga. Ese consenso está ahí para que no nos transformemos en una ONG
más. Si estas personas están en desacuerdo con este consenso, que abran el
debate primero hacia el interior de la red global, antes de presentar un
pedido de dinero.

4 - Fundación corporativa: Knight Foundation
http://www.knightfoundation.org/ está directamente sostenida por grandes
corporaciones de medios de los Estados Unidos, como The McClatchy Company.
En la fundación trabaja gente como Paul E. Steiger, que viene de ser editor
del The Wall Street Journal. Es decir, que representan la prensa
corporativa, un sistema de información con valores, lógicas y prácticas
contra los que Indymedia pretende luchar.

5 - Problemas técnicos: Entendemos que hay argumentos que plantean que
Drupal no escala bien, esto quiere decir, que no sirve para sitios con
muchas visitas y bases de datos grandes, o sea: no sirve para Indymedia
Argentina, ni tampoco para Indymedia Brasil, que son sitios con muchas
visitas, publicación y bases de datos muy grandes, por mencionar un par de
casos. Un software CMS (Content Management System) basado en Drupal no
tendría entonces utilidad para la totalidad de la red.

6 - Antecedentes: Esta situación nos parece muy similar a la vivida en los
años 2002 y 2003 con los pedidos de financiamiento a la fundación Ford y a
la fundación Soros, a los cuales nos opusimos puntualmente. Aunque fueron
rechazados en su momento, hasta el día de hoy sectores de la ultraderecha de
Argentina - vinculados a los servicios de inteligencia locales - difunden
que Indymedia Argentina es una herramienta de la CIA financiada por la
fundación Ford y Soros. Esos pedidos hicieron daño, de la misma manera que
muy probablemente lo hará este pedido que ya está publicado en el sitio de
la Fundación Knight. Al no informar previamente sobre este pedido de
subsidios en curso, quienes lo presentaron no nos dieron oportunidad de
expresar nuestras inquietudes y los riesgos vinculados al mismo.

Por lo tanto, el colectivo Indymedia Rosario se pronuncia en contra de que
este pedido de subsidios avance y solicita su inmediato retiro del sitio web
de la Fundación Knight.

Solicitamos que este mensaje de correo se entienda como un bloqueo a ese
pedido de subsidios de parte de nuestro colectivo.

Indymedia Rosario envía este mensaje al resto de los colectivos de Indymedia
Argentina, solicitando que lo acompañen si así lo consideran, y a la lista
IMC-Communication para que el resto de la red global tome conocimiento.

Hi, I am Ernesto writing in the name of IMC Rosario, part of the local
network of Indymedia in Argentina. Some days ago we received news about this
grant aplication and we have talked about this issue.

As IMC Rosario, in today's meeting we came to the following points of
consensus:

1 -  About the information of the grant: as we know it, this grant was
informed to the rest of global Indymedia after it was redacted, presented
and online in the Knight foundation website. We does not like this
procedure. We understand it should have been informed before, because now we
face a de facto situation, one which exists although it has not been agreed.

2 - Redaction of the aplication: a quickly read of the grant let us with the
feeling that the autor of it seems to be the entire Indymedia global
network, and that is not the case.

3 - Payed Indymedia work: When asking an amount of u$s 200,000 to pay a
group of techs who integrate some groups of Indymedia - we do not know who
are and which groups integrate - a basic consensus of the network is being
violated, according to which the voluntary work in Indymedia is not payed.
That consensus is there so that we do not transform ourselves into another
NGO. If these people are in discord with this consensus, they should open a
debate first towards the interior of the global network, before presenting a
grant.

4 - Corporate media: The Knight Foundation
http://www.knightfoundation.org/is sustained by big corporate media of
the United States, as The McClatchy
Company. In the foundation there is people like Paul E. Steiger, who came
from The Wall Street Journal. That is to say, they represents the
corporative press, an information system with values, logics and practices
against which Indymedia tries to fight.

5 - Tech issues: We understand that there are arguments that say that Drupal
isn't good for big Indymedia sites, sites with many visits and great data
bases, that is: it does not serve for Indymedia Argentina, nor for Indymedia
Brazil, both sites with many visits, publication and very great data bases,
to mention a pair of cases. A software CMS (Content Management System) based
on Drupal would not have then utility for the entire network.

6 - Antecedents: This situation seems to us very similar to the lived one in
2002 and 2003 with the grants to the Ford foundation and the Soros
foundation, to which we were against back then. Although they were rejected
at the time, until today sectors of the extreme right of Argentina - tie to
the local intelligence services - they spread that Indymedia Argentina is a
tool of the CIA, financed by the foundation Ford and Soros. Those grants
made damage, in the same way that could make this one that is already
published in the site of the Knight Foundation. When not informing
previously on this grant in course, they did not give opportunity us to
express our doubts about the tie risks.

Therefore, Indymedia Rosario speak against this grant and asks for their
immediate retirement of the Web site of the Knight Foundation.

We asks that this mail is understood as a block to that grant.

Indymedia Rosario send this e-mail to the rest of IMC's of Argentina, asking
they accompany it, and to the IMC-Communication list so that the rest of the
global network takes knowledge.
