obviously, i can't speak for ryan. but as far as i understand, in
portland we have tried hard to encourage people who post to the site
to post news, rather than opinions and rambling commentaries on things
they have no first-hand knowledge of. i recall lots of discussions
over trying to keep the newswire from becoming a blog. i guess it's
semantics, but to me "blog" means opinions and babbling commentary
about things people only know about by watching the corporate media.
like, things about political candidates they've never actually met, or
armchair theories about things that are happening half a world away.
for myself, i would prefer to see peoples' first-hand reports of
things they have seen and experienced for themselves, or things that
have impacted them directly. to me, that means a news site, rather
than a blog site.

(not to be confused with the myth of "objectivity." everything is
subjective, and when i read a post to the site, i want to know how the
person feels about what they have witnessed or experienced. in that
sense, opinions are good. just... empty opinions about theoretical
ether... there's more than enough of that in the world already.)

not sure if that's what ryan meant. but it's what i think of when i
think of blogging.
