Hi all,
Steev I agree with at some point about how is fucked up to have all this
people flying etc.. But I am afraid to do it by video it will exclude
some collectives who doesnt have the techies around to help them with
the video stream or a video camera....
Also, there is the language barriers that make it difficult for people
to be following streams, face to face you can make that easy by
translating to the people around you etc.
My point is that I really think like jay on this one, I am looking
forward to this meeting because I believe what we need to discuss is how
we re-organize the network, how we can get the collectives involved in
it again. I don't see it as a gathering of those who were involved on
indymedia etc. I prefer that the people who come are active people in
the network and in their local collectives. I know there are many local
collectives who are not participating on the global network but they are
very active locally, i.e. Bolivia network.
Face to face meeting can bring a new energy to the network and get
people involved again, we could move forward with some projects we have
like the payment survey - even try to make a tech survey as it was
discussed during the drupal grant discussion.. things like this that is
part of the process of re-organizing indymedia network, but is not
necessary making any decisions, but just collecting information so we
can know better what is up within the network and then propose new forms
of organizing etc that has more to do with the reality of the network
nowadays - because we are following processes created in 2001 (most of
them) which was a totally different scenario that we are today.
For instance Brazil network is trying to make something similar, we
started by going through our documentation at docs, signalizing what
needs to be updated (processes that doesn't fit the reality of our
network nowadays and could be changed etc) - with the problem with docs
server this is on hold for now. But we are kind of trying to make the
same thing for our network. So I think we could do the same for global,
highlighting things from the docs that we could discuss in this face
to face meeting and this will help many IMC's who barely knows what is
on docs, and knows how indymedia network is organized nowadays, to
understand it and give an opinion on it.
All this focusing on re-organizing the network, making communication
easier for all of us, and listing processes that we need to change,
maybe create proposals of how it should be changed, and then bring it to
our collectives and to the mailing lists to try to build a consensus on
it. I would like to hear people ideas of how we could get the network
functional again, what they don't understand from the processes, what
they think it could be changed or improved, etc.
It could be a good moment too to have a discussion about the new cms,
mostly from the 'user point of view' not that technical but to collect
ideas of how it should work from the imc's volunteers.
Anyways, I have many ideas for this and I think it is a very important
opportunity for us, we should try to make it happen :)
bye
