Hi Pim,

I am writing this mail in personal capacity.

IMC linksunten is taking communication with the network very seriously.
Penguin proposed a seven day deadline on 29.10.2011 and we are
responding today. We discussed this whole topic over and over again so
the delay is due to our grassroots decision making process.

Concerning your question about uk.indymedia.org: on 08.05.2011 IMC
Northern England proposed [1] the handover of indymedia.org.uk by the
Mayday group within one week. On 15.05.2011 this proposal passed [2] and
IMC Northern England asked for the implementation of the decision.

On 28.05.2011 IMC London [3] and on 29.05.2011 IMC linksunten [4] asked
again for the implementation of the decision and described in detail
what they think should be done. On the same day, IMC linksunten
criticised [5] the way tech power is handled in the Indymedia network:

> Access to technical resources forms a hierarchy. In an
> anti-authoritarian network as Indymedia it must be controlled
> by a bottom-up decision-making. We think it is necessary that
> people with privileged access to our infrastructure must be
> integrated in this grassroots decision-making process through
> Indymedia collectives, they have to respect decision that have
> been collectively taken by the network and they have to
> implement them.

In two side notes, IMC linksunten remembered the network on 28.08.2011
[6] and on 14.10.2011 [7] that the decision had still not been
implemented and asked the ones with the tech power to either implement
the decision or leave the network. Until today, uk.indymedia.org
redirects to the stolen domain indymedia.org.uk. Thus, there is a link
to indymedia.org.uk on nearly every IMC website.

We did not ask for the disaffiliation of uk.indymedia.org as the UK
network has ceased to exist on 01.05.2011. Instead, on 07.05.2011 we
asked [8] the DNS working group to change the DNS record for
uk.indymedia.org to point to the splash page on traven. Neither has the
DNS working group changed the record for uk.indymedia.org that currently
points to chavez nor have the techies with access to chavez [9] changed
the redirection rules to indymedia.org.uk on chavez. As those techies
have decided not to implement the decision taken on 15.05.2011 we now
ask the moderators of the cities list to delete the link to
uk.indymedia.org.

In my opinion this abuse of tech power is the worst breach of confidence
I have experienced so far within the network. And it's a shame that the
Indymedia network seems to accept that the Mayday group has excluded de
facto half of the UK network from access to their website and that they
still act uppity [10] and smile [11].

ich schreibe diese Mail aus meiner persönlichen Sicht.

IMC linksunten nimmt die Kommunikation mit dem Netzwerk sehr ernst.
Penguin hat am 29.10.2011 eine Deadline in sieben Tagen vorgeschlagen
und wir antworten heute. Wir haben das ganze Thema wieder und wieder
diskutiert und die Verzögerung liegt an unserem basisdemokratischen
Entscheidungsprozess.

Zu deiner Frage über uk.indymedia.org: am 08.05.2011 hat IMC Northern
England die Rückgabe von indymedia.org.uk durch die Mayday Gruppe
innerhalb einer Woche gefordert [1]. Am 15.05.2011 wurde diese Forderung
vom Netzwerk bestätigt [2] und IMC Northern England hat um die Umsetzung
der Entscheidung gebeten.

Am 28.05.2011 hat IMC London [3] und am 29.05.2011 IMC linksunten [4]
erneut um die Umsetzung der Entscheidung gebeten und en detail
beschrieben, was ihrer Meinung nach dafür getan werden sollte. Am
gleiben Tag hat IMC linksunten den Umgang mit technischer Macht im
Indymedia-Netzwerk kritisiert [5]:

> Zugang zu technischen Ressourcen stellt eine Hierarchie dar, die
> in einem antiautoritären Netzwerk wie Indymedia basisdemokratisch
> kontrolliert werden muss. Es ist aus unserer Sicht daher nötig,
> dass alle Menschen mit priviligierten Zugängen zu unserer
> Infrastruktur über Indymedia-Kollektive in den basisdemokratischen
> Entscheidungsprozess eingebunden werden und dass sie kollektiv
> getroffene Entscheidung des Netzwerks respektieren und umsetzen.

In zwei Notizen hat IMC linksunten das Netzwerk am 29.08.2011 [6] und am
14.10.2011 [7] daran erinnert, dass die Entscheidung noch immer nicht
umgesetzt ist und diejenigen mit der entsprechenden technischen Macht
aufgefordert, die Entscheidung umzusetzen oder das Netzwerk zu
verlassen. Bis heute leitet uk.indymedia.org auf die gestohlene Domain
indymedia.org.uk weiter. Daher befindet sich ein Link zu
indymedia.org.uk auf nahezu jeder IMC Website.

Wir haben nicht die Auflösung von uk.indymedia.org vorgeschlagen, da das
UK-Netzwerk bereits am 01.05.2011 aufgehört hat zu existieren.
Stattdessen haben wir am 07.05.2011 die DNS-Arbeitsgruppe gebeten [8],
den DNS-Eintrag für uk.indymedia.org zu ändern und auf die Splash Page
auf Traven zeigen zu lassen. Weder hat die DNS-Arbeitsgruppe den Eintrag
für uk.indymedia.org geändert, der zur Zeit auf Chavez zeigt [9], noch
haven diejenigen mit Zugang zu Chavez die Weiterleitung zu
indymedia.org.uk auf Chavez geändert. Da diese Techies entschieden
haben, die Entscheidung vom 15.05.2011 nicht umzusetzen, bitten wir die
ModeratorInnen der Cities List den Link zu uk.indymedia.org zu löschen.

Meiner Meinung nach ist dieser Missbrauch technischer Macht der
schlimmste Vertrauensbruch, den ich bisher im Netzwerk erlebt habe. Und
es ist eine Schande, dass das Indymedia-Netzwerk offenbar akzeptiert,
dass de facto die Hälfte des UK-Netzwerks vom Zugang zu ihrer Website
ausgeschlossen wurde und dass sie immer noch von oben herab [10] grinsen
[11].
