greetings, all
i've got a few minutes, thought i'd send a belated update from the
convergence.
easy trip up here, no hassles or problems.
we're busy building the LPFM now, getting into gear with other workshops -
mostly audio-related, but also on consensus and other topics. spent some
time last night speaking about indymedia experiences in Zim, Joburg, Cape
Town, Kenya; the media situation in Uganda.
Mpumi's a bit sick, but recovering; the rest of us are well.
we arrived to find various tensions - with some of the WSF organisers,
stemming from the visa letter problems (but you will be more uptotheminute
there, following discussion on imc-africa) - and other tension within the
group, coming from conflict over prioritising/practicing horizontal
structures and a desire to get moving with workshops and construction.
so not the happiest group you've ever met, and some painfully awkward
meetings. to be expected when people arrived with very different
expectations, and have travelled here from very different backgrounds.
the space - since so many fewer people are here than originally expected -
is more than adequate. but it is inconveniently far from the WSF venue, and
much more importantly from shops or internet. we have a single dialup that
peaks at about 230 K, so any audio or video streaming from here is out of
the question. this will be our base for building and workshopping, but the
media productions will have to be sent out from elsewhere, hence
we're also wrestling with the WSF organisers to get a permanent space at the
venue to set up the radio station - something we talked about on the list,
but never settled with the WSF team. it looks promising, we should know by
the end of the day.
the people from Maseno will not be here until Saturday or Sunday, and
there's almost no one here from Nairobi at this point - worrying, since
we're building a station that will be staying here. folks were waiting (if i
understand right) for basic infrastructure to be in place before inviting
people - some locals will be joining us as the week wears on.
things are fast-improving.
i'll stop there - check the list, i think other people are posting stuff
there. i don't have the aptience to wait in line for the internet. but i'll
be online (FSRN work) on Thursday, and i'll send a major one
i hope it's not too late to say that whatever videos of Cape Town struggle
we have handy should come out with Lettie, Nopasika - cuz folks would love
to see them, and i didn't get around to cllecting anything.
hope you're all well
terna
