Coffad 2006: Our Memorial of the Massacre at the Castle Inn 3 Mehefin 1831
The picture above is close to the 1831 site of the Castle Inn, Merthyr Tudful. This location was on 3 June 2006 designated as Plas 3 Mehefin 1831 in memory of all those killed by the soldiers stationed at the Inn on this infamous day in Welsh History. Hence this will be the location of an annual commemoration service to be organised by Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr in association with Antur Gwrthrhyfel 1831 Initiative and other sympathetic societies.

Unfortunatly organiser of the Cardiff Dic Penderyn Commemoration cllr Charles Gale has died and despite all my efforts i have not been able to find out who, if anyone is organising an ''official'' commemoration close to the Dic Penderyn plaque on Cardiff Market. I would suggest that with the below in mind any commemoration being organised be held at 12: noon to allow people time to travel to Port Talbot for commemorative event there. In Caerdydd and at Port Talbot; Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr will during course of the day place flowers as will Cymdeithas Dic Penderyn contact Debbie bardo celtic.debs at virgin.net , the Labour Party and Plaid Cymru. There will be a memorial service at St Mary's Church at 4pm on Sunday the 13th,followed by a wreath laying ceremony, the whole event should last about one hour. This event is organised by Cllr Malcolm Jones. conntact: cllr.m.i.jones at neath-porttalbot.gov.uk Please attend both events with 1831 Red, Black and White flags and Organisation's banners as well as Y Ddraig Goch and Welsh Republican Flags.

Your personal tributes of wreaths and flowers are welcome.

1831 News:

The Dic Penderyn Posthumous Pardon campaign continues despite obstacles, reasons for pardon refusal is quite simply the letter of English Law is being exactly followed and observed. the law does not take into account much which is seen as ''false evidence'' and later ''myth'' rather than the hard ''factual'' evidence arising at the trial of the 1831 Insurrectionists. Thus whilst there is no doubt Dic Penderyn was a martyr of peoples struggle for justice against tyranny and oppression, deserving of a pardon from a legacy of ''criminality'' that the trial conferred upon him. However, the law it seems is the law and much of the facts points towards Dic Penderyn has ''probably'' having stabbed the Scots Soldier Donald Black. So the Home Office will continue to dig it's heels in and refuse pardon for Dic Penderyn, FIN! Our view and opinion is that Dic Penderyn was a radical involved in a just cause and if in that cause he was forced to use militant means to defend himself from Soldiers using their bayonets and muskets, later used to kill 26 people, the forgotten martys of this struggle. Then ''Guilt'' or ''Innocence'' is of little consequence as Dic Penderyn killed no one and certainly did not deserve to be hung, FIN! This matter is dealt with in greater detail in the first issue of the Newsletter of Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr which is available on request from lewsyn.yrheliwr at ntlworld.com Further fresh light may be cast on these matters in an episode of the BBC Wales Crime Solvers series which is on subject of Dic Penderyn and will be broadcast this coming Tuesday 15 - 8 - 2006.

Post Script:

Prior to Dic Penderyn's execution his friend Lewis Lewis/Lewsyn yr Heliwr and three other comrades found guilty of rebellion were taken out of Wales quickly and imprisoned in England and in the following year were transported to Australia. Their story has been researched and is at moment being written as an article by Sian Ifan who has also in publication an '1831 Companion Reader' booklet complete with many interesting illustrations and photographs. This work by Sian Ifan emphasizes much which later ''Crachach History'' would rather forget and play down, very much same Merthyr Tudful Council did this year in ignoring the 175th of the Merthyr Rising whilst in previous year give Richard Trevethic and his steam train the ''Full Monty''. It would seem that the struggle of people for dignity, fairplay and justice is of less import than the inventing of the technology of capitalisms Industrial revolution. In this regard i would also have thought that at least one of Labours A.M's may have requested that on 31 Mai an 1831 red flag be flown anually out side the Assembly and why not similar action be carried out by any number of councils throughout Wales in memory of those who died in the cause of advancing democracy from which we all benefit today. Possibly then being flown at half mast on 3 Mehefin and 13 Awst. I am not holding my breath but am hoping that individuals will at least call upon their councils to carry out such as a meaningful remembrance activity.

Remember 4 Tachwedd is anniversary of the Newport Insurrection of 1839:

                                                                                                          Any one organising anything?

Radically yours,

Gethin Gruffydd. Antur 1831 Initiative Motivator.

Afterthoughts: Picture is of myself at age 5, the area is Caedraw, Merthyr Tudful. i was born in Merthyr in 1946 and spent much time staying with my grandparents at Adam and Eves Court, Pond Side, Caedraw. At about time this photo was taken my grandfather, a coal miner would be killed in a colliery accident. He had been a miner most of his life apart from time serving as soldier in WW I in which he was gassed as well as receiving leg wound, in 1935 he was active in the stay down strikes. My mother has fond memories of her father and tells me he was quite a rebel but then his name is Hughes and just read how many of they were rebels in 1831. Caedraw mentioned above was in general area of where the people began to gather early on morning of 3 Mehefin 1831, a most fateful and infamous day in Welsh History, that day 80 Scots Soldiers would march from Brecon into Merthyr and station them selves at the Castle Inn to defend the Town's establishment. For most of the morning 1000's of towns people gathered around the Castle Inn and the rest his history, but what an history. The significance of the 1831 Insurrection is for the most part lost on Welsh people and certainly not remembered internationally as much as the Paris Commune of 1871. Yet, it was on 31 May 1831 the ''Welsh Insurrectionists'' would be first to rise up a Red Flag on Hirwaun common, then on the 1 June 1831 mobilise possibly the first ever armed ''Workers Army'' in the squatters 'Tai un Nos' town ship of Cefn on outskirts of Merthyr. Not least worth remembering is of course the fact that this ''Workers Army'' of radical insurrectionists and the militant people of Merthyr seized the town for a week until their rebellion was put down by 100's of Soldiers and local Yeomanry Militias. Not quite the Paris Commune but very close and almost a ''Merthyr Commune''. I though i would close this email circular by personalising the history a little not out of vanity but more to emphasize just how close we all are in Wales to tremendous historical events, some of which our ancestors were involved in. In an age where ''trivia'' fills young minds and the collective memory of communities fade it is very important as many of us as possible become ''REMEMBRANCERS'' and pass on to our children all that is truly worth remembering. In respect to 1831 i would hope the young who might be disinterested in political involvement and whom refrain from voting will for one moment give thought to those who fought and died to get them that vote and more struggled to attain fairplay and justice which is now an inheritance we need to deeply cherish and of course remember anniversaries as the one that falls this Sunday 13 Awst 2006. Please as requested if possible attend commemorations in Cardiff and/or Aberafan/Port Talbot. Diolch.

NB:

If wishing to join with the Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr remembrance party please contact myself to arrange place and time to meet in Port Talbot this Sunday.
