Bristol Radical History Week       ANTUR 1831 NEWS: BRISTOL RADICAL HISTORY WEEK AND NEWPORT RISING 1839 COMMEMORATION? PLEASE PASS ON TO OTHERS.

Please note below brief information on BRISTOL RADICAL HISTORY WEEK 2006, if you cannot visit then take a look at relevent web sites. You will or should be aware the the 4th November marks anniversary of the Gwent Insurrection/Newport Rising of 1839. Ideal occasion perhaps for some socialist group to hold a ''Radical Weekend'' in Casnewydd. Myself will be off and away that weekend taking in the territory of the 'Scotch Cattle' and possibly end up in Casnewydd to lay wreath in memory of the massacred workers. Suffice to say for now your study of this 1839 insurrection can be well served on the web but also do obtain the book on the Newport Rising written by Ifor Wilks . My article on 1848 and the ''cultural nationalist myth'' of the Blue Books will also be appropriate and is available on request, as is much else. Yes! i know you have not had ANTUR GWRTHRYFEL 1831 information for a while but i have had personal matters to focus on and after all the work on 1831 Commemoration 2006, i had to take a break,  rest and that could only be done by returning to the present and leaving 1831 in the past for a while. Good news is that a news bulletin is on the way plus we have been working on a pamphlet and an ANTUR GWRTHRYFEL 1831 WEB SITE. I hope with the 1831 Commemoration 2007 in mind this web site will be of great advantage and i suggest attention to the below BRISTOL RADICAL HISTORY WEEK 2006 may enthuse our own radicals regards much more effort and endeavour to develope our own major annual INSURRECTION 1831 RED WEEK COMMEMORATION next year. This year much was left wanting given consideration it was the 175th anniversary 1831 - 2006. Meanwhile Wales is still without a major Socialist Political Commemorative Festival and the annual Tolpuddle Festival seems good enough for Welsh Labour Party? BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH IS IT!

                  >Bristol Radical History Week
                  Bristol Radical History Week is a series of events aimed at opening up to public scrutiny some of the hidden and misrepresented history of Bristol. Rather then concentrating on royals, famous engineers or wealthy merchants, Bristol Radical History Week is going to concern itself with the proper people of Bristol. The mass of sometime rebellious and mutinous people who had their own agendas to fulfil.

                  The week will also be looking at the links to people who were drawn into the network of Atlantic trading that centered on Bristol as a port. These are the impressed sailors, West African slaves, transported vagrants, indentured labourers and pirates amongst others, who made up what has recently been called the 'Atlantic Proletariat'. 

                  We will discover how the end of slavery, the rise of democracy, and the independence of colonial lands were the results of collective actions by extraordinary 'ordinary' people and NOT just middle class reformers, rich benefactors and generous governments as we are constantly told.

                  The week will feature the following events:

                      a.. Piracy and Mutiny 
                      b.. The Atlantic Slave Trade : Resistance and Rebellion 
                      c.. Insurrectionary Bristol 
                      d.. Bristol and the Revolutionary Atlantic 
                      e.. Religious Radicals 
                    c.. A film festival featuring works relevant to the themes of the week. 
                    d.. An exhibition of paintings, prints and artifacts. 
                    e.. History walks charting the 'hidden' history of the city. 
                    f.. Children's events featuring films, walks, story telling, dressing up and more.

                  >Why October 2006 ?
                  October 2006 marks two significant anniversaries in the radical history of Bristol.

                  The 175th anniversary of the 1831 uprising sparked by the demands for suffrage. This insurrection, which put the city of Bristol in the hands of a revolutionary mob for several days, had profound effects upon the rise of democracy in Britain. 

                  Queens Square 30th October 1831, R. Cartwight 1831.

                  The 350th anniversary of the 'blasphemous' ride of the radical preacher and ex-soldier of the New Model Army, James Nayler into Bristol. The arrest and savage torture of Nayler as a result of his actions marked the beginning of the general repression of the radical currents generated by the English Civil War.

                  These historic moments will be remembered on the streets of the city during Bristol Radical History Week.

                  >Our philosophy.
                  Bristol Radical History Week will be open to all, will be free or of minimal cost and include events for children. The participants will be both members of the public, local history groups and visiting expert speakers. As far as possible the commemorations, debates and lectures will be situated in locations that mark Bristol's radical history. 

                  Bristol Radical History Week is being organised by local people from Bristol and is NOT funded by Universities, Political Parties, Business or Local Government.
