INSURRECTION 1831 - COMMEMORATION 2006, 175th Anniversary of the ''Merthyr Commune''.
                                                                                La Commune de Paris 1871 - 2006, 135th Anniversary.

See Paris Commune in Wikipedia, free web encyclopaedia. Term "Paris Commune" (French: La Commune de Paris) originally referred to the government of Paris during the French Revolution. However, the term more commonly refers to the socialist government that briefly ruled Paris from March 18 (more formally from March 26) to May 28, 1871.

Paris Commune 1871 Commemoration, to see below in full for details of 2006 programmeand other information on Paris Commune of 1871.

Les Amis de la Commune de Paris 1871 AGENDA 2006

Fellow ''Welsh Communards'' .

After browsing through this web site above, you are going to ''Eat Your Heart Out''. However, this web site shows us what we could aim for and achieve, for years the 1831 commemoration has been sustained by a small local Dic Penderyn Society with out whom there would be no commemoration at all. The Wales TUC with support of UNISON organised an excellent major festival in 2003 but for verity of reasons did not continue with holding what was the only major ''Welsh Socialist Festival'', now the nearest such festival is the one held in Dorset regards commemoration of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. This year I have attempted with my partner Sian due to fact of 175th anniversary to promote a broader commemoration of Insurrection 1831 Commemoration 2006 mainly in communities associated with the dramatic events of 1831 as at Penderyn, Hirwaun, Aberdare, Caerdydd, Pyle and Port Talbot. Further, we have advanced ideas as 1831 Memorials, Dic Penderyn Memorial Walks as well as 1831 ALIVE! Living History Initiative. All with various degrees of success, on the whole failings are due to fact we both have other work to do and thus our efforts are part time plus of course we are not funded other than out of our own pockets., plus the ''usual let downs''. However, we have ploughed on and achieved much not least in promotion of the history of Insurrection 1831 Merthyr Rising at home and abroad. The fact that our 1831 Initiative did not arise until late 2005 and we did not fully launch efforts until the new year has also not contributed to advancing all we wish to have advanced, but we are heartened by a number of ''bodies'' and individuals that have shown interest regards aiding and assisting development of an annual Insurrection 1831 Merthyr Rising Commemoration as a major Welsh ''RED FLAG - HERITAGE FESTIVAL''. Such in mind note that i will propose a meeting be held some time before the proposed ''RED SUMMER'' is over to discuss potential of organising and holding such festival, if interested to contact myself at lewsyn.yrheliwr at ntlworld.com I would then hope that such meeting could be held under auspices of the Dic Penderyn Society. I will keep all of interest fully informed, as for the present Insurrection 1831 Commemoration 2006, it is still possible to make of the Merthyr Rising 1831 - 2006 Commemoration a RED FLAG - HERITAGE FESTIVAL with thanks to the Dic Penderyn Socitey who have organised events to take place over weekend of 3 & 4th June and concluding on 7th June with the annual professor Gwyn Alf Lecture. This means that all we need is for any number of ''bodies'' (Organisations and Societies etc) to just ''Autonomously'' do what ever they can, as hold a meeting, talks or folk evening etc and so fourth during course of the week or if wished on either weekends; simply just ''do it'' in other words ''Seize the Time''. What ever, just let me have some details to place in my Insurrection 1831 Commemoration 2006 Information Service Newsletters. Other than that, if attending such as the walk form Cefn to Castle Hotel on Saturday Morning 3 June and later spending the afternoon at Cyfarthfa Castle and having yourself a ''Red Picnic'' in Parc Cyfarthfa, why not ''enter into the spirit'' of 1831 ALIVE! by that i mean dress in costumes of the period to get a little sense and feel for the ''Life & times'' that was Merthyr Tudful and other valleys communities in 1831

Further, do not forget to make and bring plenty of 'RED FLAGS'. It cannot be any easier, just some effort and enthusiasm.

We are seriously tempted to fly over to Paris for the Insurrection 1871 Commemoration there on dates noted above, to soak up the atmosphere and get some ideas for our potential future 1831 'Red Flag' - Red Heritage Festival. If anyone does intend going and we cannot make it, please do us a report with some photos for our newsletter. Other than that note the Paris Commune came to it's sad conclusion on 28 May, in 1831 that time in May was witnessing the beginnings of our Welsh Insurrection 1831 with on 31 May 1831 the rising of the Red Flag on Hirwaun Common. Over that weekend i hope something will be organised in Hirwaun? not much interest shown by any of the community so far ? However, at the very least i suggest you visit the area and have a ''Red Flag Ramble'' on Hirwaun common. (see web maps for public foot paths). To conclude can any ''body'' organise a talk on the 1871 Paris Commune at Hirwaun or Aberdare over the May BH or/and in Merthyr during ''RED WEEK 1 - 7 JUNE'', or sometime during the proposed ''Red Summer', if so let me know.

PS:

I shall look into a possible ''Twinning'' between these two ''Red Flag'' events also possible link to the annual Scottish 1820 Insurrection Commemoration. Any suggestions regards other similar commemorative events to link up with?

 if so details please.

No interest shown yet in having a Saturday Morning 3 June March/Parade into Merthyr, so looks to be a walk possibly from Cefn to the Castle Inn Site. Nevertheless bring Red Flags also wreaths and flowers if you cannot attend the ''official memoriam service'' on Sunday 4th June organised by the Dic Penderyn Society. Further details on the aforementioned 3 June 1831 Memoriam Walk will be sent on request along with any other information coming in over coming days. So Please any information to send in please do so asap, as again i have an editorial deadline.

FOOT NOTE

Some have commented that it is ''unusual'' for two known ''Medieval Remembrancers'' to be promoting such as 1831, well you see i was born in Merthyr Tudful with father and grand father miners, so i have ''Coal dust between my toes''. Sian has ''Slate dust between her toes'' having been born in Blaenau Ffestiniog, her father worked in the Slate Quarries. Sian may be a ''Gog'' but her mam was an ''Hwntw''. My side, mams family very much indigenous 'Cymry' but Dad's side 'Welsh', Forest of Dean, Irish and Cockney. Quite an interesting mix but that's Southern Wales but the Southern ''Industrial Experience'' made them ''Welsh'' and ''Socialist''.
