Friends,

It seems that the Israeli Embassy in Cyprus learned a lesson from the 
last time it had attempted to promote a celebration of Zionist genocide 
in Palestine.

A riot had ensued when our peoples' determined efforts to protest the 
event, bringing embarrassment to the politicians and fashionable 
socialites who attended the Zionist gala and cocktail party, were 
answered by a totally unprovoked attack by the Police and subsequent 
trials (which we won!).

This year, the Embassy was forced to go another route. The letter below 
from Phaedon, member of the Cyprus Stop the War Coalition [StWC_Cy] 
explains how the Israeli Embassy elected to have an event organized only 
among officials without opening it either to the public or to its 
supporters who come "by private invitation only".

Finally the information came in! Last night (Wed evening 7/5) the 
Israeli ambassador held a reception to mark Israel's 60th anniversary.
Unfortunately we missed the opportunity to stage a protest.

However, I believe that in the statement we are preparing we should make 
a point about the 'secrecy' of the Israeli ambassador as to the plans to 
hold a reception along the following lines:

It is not accidental that there was no information all these days about 
it in the Greek Cypriot press but also, there is no mention at all about 
celebrations in the official website of Israel's Embassy in Nicosia!
The explanation of course is that the Embassy feared of any planned 
protests reminiscent of April 2002 when hundreds of protestors 
surrounded the amabassador's residence and disrupted the reception that 
was given to state officials and diplomats to mark the 54th anniversary 
of Israeli State.
Given the ongoing onslaught of the Israeli army in Gaza and knowining 
the feelings of solidarity and sympathy of the Cypriot people towards 
the Palestinians, the Israeli Embassy avoided to publicise the date or 
the venue of the reception. That's something!

Those who can read Greek see the attached report from today's 'Haravgi' 
(AKEL's daily) about last night's reception where President Christofias 
was there - the venue is not specified.

Ο Πρόεδρος στη δεξίωση 60χρονων του Ισραήλ
Τη βεβαιότητα ότι θα συνεχιστούν οι πολύ καλές σχέσεις Κύπρου και Ισραήλ 
και θα αναπτυχθούν περαιτέρω, εξέφρασε χθες βράδυ ο Πρόεδρος της 
Δημοκρατίας Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας. Μιλώντας κατά τη δεξίωση που παρέθεσε ο 
πρεσβευτής του Ισραήλ Abraham Haddad με την ευκαιρία της 60ής επετείου 
από την ίδρυση του κράτους του Ισραήλ, ο Πρόεδρος Χριστόφιας είπε πως το 
επίπεδο των διμερών σχέσεων Κύπρου και Ισραήλ είναι πολύ καλά 
αναπτυγμένο σε όλους τους τομείς. Ο Πρόεδρος Χριστόφιας είπε ότι η 
Κύπρος υποστηρίζει την ύπαρξη του Ισραήλ και την αναγνώριση του από όλη 
τη διεθνή κοινότητα περιλαμβανομένων των αραβικών κρατών. Ανέφερε επίσης 
ότι οι Παλαιστίνιοι έχουν το δικαίωμα να δημιουργήσουν το δικό τους 
ανεξάρτητο κράτος, σύμφωνα με τα ψηφίσματα του ΟΗΕ. Ευχήθηκε δε το 
συντομότερο δυνατό, να επανέλθει η ειρήνη στην περιοχή μας, στο Ισραήλ 
και στην Παλαιστίνη. Ο Πρόεδρος Χριστόφιας συνεχάρη τον Πρεσβευτή και 
τον λαό του Ισραήλ για την 60ή επέτειο της ίδρυσης του κράτους του 
Ισραήλ. Ο Πρεσβευτής του Ισραήλ Abraham Haddad είπε ότι οι δύο χώρες 
διατηρούν ιστορική και παραδοσιακή φιλία. Πρόσθεσε ότι έχει αντίκτυπο 
στις δυναμικές διμερείς σχέσεις, στον ανοικτό και φιλικό πολιτικό 
διάλογο των δύο χωρών καθώς και στην σταθερή οικονομική ανάπτυξη και τη 
συνεργασία στον πολιτιστικό και ιατρικό τομέα. Ευχήθηκε τέλος όπως οι 
καλές διμερείς σχέσεις που έχουν σήμερα Κύπρος και Ισραήλ να συνεχίσουν 
να αναπτύσσονται για το συμφέρον των λαών τους.
