Press Release
You Have A Chance To Be Witness To A Significant Part Of Our Country's
History
It was 41 years ago that Martin Luther King, Jr. held the first Poor
People's
March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial. At that event Dr. King said:
"These are revolutionary times. All over the globe men are revolting
against old systems of exploitation and oppression, and out of the
wounds of a frail world, new systems of justice and equality are being
born. The shirtless and barefoot people of the land are rising up as
never before. The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light."
On Sunday, October 17th, the first Million Worker March on Washington,DC
will
be held at the Lincoln Memorial. The march will be the voice of all those
who
feel that America, great as she is, is not working for the majority of
working
people. The march speaks to the agenda of Martin Luther King. It speaks
to the disenfranchised poor and to the unsatisfied working majority. And it
speaks to people who want peace. The Million Worker March is organized by
and for working people (both union and non-union) to bring issues like the
outsourcing of jobs, affordable healthcare, and putting a high priority on
education to the immediate attention of the political structure. This event
is spearheaded by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local
10, of San Francisco, one of the nation's most progressive and egalitarian
unions. It will be a grand day of people coming together in support of
peace,
fair wages, fair labor practices and fair international trade.
Speakers at the podium will include Martin Luther King, III, Jesse Jackson,
Danny Glover, and a host of national and international labor leaders who
have
been at the forefront of struggles for social justice. There will be many
people there to cheer them on. And it will be televised live on C-SPAN.
Jack Chernos, on banjo and accompanied by his band, the Real Department of
Justice, will perform a set of his songs, including "The Union Grand," at
the
march. "The Union Grand" has been adopted as the official theme song of the
Million Worker March. Lyrics, sheet music and sound clips for "The Union
Grand" can be accessed at his website,
http://www.department-of-justice.org/.
(Jack can be contacted directly before and during the March at
415-812-6203.)
Jack's songs are both rousing and inspirational and will add a forceful
presence and an unforgettable melody. As usual, his music sums up the
spirit
of the day perfectly.
As you may know, Jack has written songs of historical significance including
"The Silence of Good People," which was taken into the collection of the
National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis last year, and "Sold Down the
River,"
the song played in continuous-loop from the Steelworkers' billboard truck in
Seattle during the WTO protests of 1999. Like the WTO protests, the Million
Worker March will surprise many who are not in touch with what working
people
are up against on a daily basis. When Americans join together to work for
good, there is an outpouring of energy that can light the way for us all to
make our country stronger.
All of Jack's historical songs can be appreciated at
www.department-of-justice.org <http://www.department-of-justice.org> .

Included below are the lyrics to the song everyone will be singing at the
march, The Union Grand.
The Union Grand
Come all you truckers, you miners, you welders
You dock workers, pipe fitters, pickers, hops, belters
>From all walks of life, from each union and local
Come join the Union Grand
Come all you marchers, you chanters, you posters
You tree sitters, sign holders, letter writers, jail goers
For peace and for justice, for the people, for the planet
Come join the Union Grand
Come join the grand, grand union of unions
Come join the Union Grand
All struggles for justice are struggles united
Come join the Union Grand
Solidarity, my friends, there are forces ahold
Institutions and systems running out of control
To harm us and rob us and, worst, to divide us
Come join the Union Grand
Solidarity, my friends, the cogs are upon us
It is life on this planet against the great maw of profit
We must organize and unite if we're ever to stop it
Come join the Union Grand
Come join the grand, grand union of unions ...
Solidarity, my friends, it is a thunderous word
It can shake the tall towers and roil the wide earth
We are the tide, we are billions!
Come build the Union Grand
Come build the grand, grand union of unions...
