4) This week's summary
of under-reported news

Compiled by Bob Nixon

-Rumors of a new U.S. military base in Paraguay have been circulating
since the South American government agreed to 13 U.S. joint military
exercises that will run through December 2006. U.S. hostility toward the
leading left-wing Bolivian presidential candidate Evo Morales has raised
fears about U.S. intervention.
- A 2003 memo shows that six staff lawyers in the U.S. Justice Dept. and
two analysts asserted the Texas congressional redistricting plan pushed
by then-House Majority leader Tom Delay vio-lated the Voting Rights Act.
But, top officials in the Justice Dept. overruled staff opinion and
ap-proved the plan. DeLay is now under indictment in Texas for illegally
diverting funds to the GOP campaigns of legislators who drew the map.
- Under threat of a boycott from the archconservative American Family
Association, Ford Motor Company has agreed to stop advertising its
Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles in gay publications.
