4) This week's summary of under-reported news
Compiled by Bob Nixon

*Argentina's first lady Christina Fernandez de Kirchner won election as the nation's
next president, reflecting a surge in the number of women leaders elected in
traditionally male-dominated Latin America.
*At Cygnus factory in Chicago, undocumented Latino workers went on strike after
being told to prove their legal immigration status in 15 days or be fired. A parent
company Mariette Corp. negotiator settled the dispute and workers got their jobs back
-- "no one else would work at their wages."
*Americans drank a record 30 billion bottles of water in 2005; the plastic waste
is equal to 1.5 billion barrels of oil. Anti-water bottle activists are facing off against
big food and beverage companies.
