The importance of grassroots on successful social justice movements in the
United States is undeniable. Yet, in many recent public discourses (whether
in the presidential campaign or in response to the housing crash) the role
and import of community organizing has been called into question. This
symposium seeks to facilitate a consideration of the role of grassroots on
the work of lawyers, judges, activists, artists, and advocates. Although the
symposium will focus on three distinct areas: criminal justice, reproductive
justice, and sexuality, the implications are much broader. Participants will
consider the utility of grassroots organizing in their work using various
methodologies including art, legal theory, and litigation.

"I would like to leave behind me the conviction that if we maintain a
certain amount of caution and organization we deserve victory... You cannot
carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness. In this
case, it comes from nonconformity, the courage to turn your back on the old
formulas, the courage to invent the future. It took the madmen of yesterday
for us to be able to act with extreme clarity today. I want to be one of
those madmen. We must dare to invent the future."
Thomas Sankara, 1985
