   ";Trickle-Down" Economics, Tax Cuts
for the Rich Exacerbate Income Inequality
 RealAudio
   MP3
 Interview with Brian Miller,
executive director of United for a Fair Economy,
conducted by Scott Harris

Despite strong opposition from progressive activists and some
legislators, President Obama's deal with Republicans to maintain the
Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans over the next two years
won approval in both the House and Senate and was signed into law on
Dec. 17. While the tax measure continues unemployment benefits for
another 13 months and cuts payroll taxes by two percent, the extension
of tax cuts for America's richest citizens maintains the Republican
"trickle down" policy that is one of the least effective ways to create
new jobs, according to most economists. Story continues

   Report: Palestinians Suffer Egregious Discrimination
Under Israeli Control

Unequal: Israel's Discriminatory Treatment of Palestinians in the
Occupied Palestinian Territories," which documents specific and
egregious discrimination against Palestinian residents of "Area C" of
the West Bank, that is, the area exclusively controlled by Israel, not
the Palestinian Authority. Story continues

  Compiled by Bob Nixon
After a terrorist trained in Yemen failed in his attempt to bomb a
U.S. airliner on Christmas Day 2009 over Detroit, top Yemeni government
leaders warned American diplomats its nuclear storage facility was not
secure and vulnerable to a terrorist attack.("WikiLeaks Cables: Yemen radioactive stocks 'were easy al-Qaida target,'" The Guardian, Dec. 19, 2010) The investigative news agency, ProPublica reports the Obama White
House is preparing a new executive order on indefinite detention which
will allow regular reviews of evidence for dozens of prisoners held at
the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but would institutionalize
the Bush-era practice of holding detainees without charge or trial. ("White House drafts executive order for indefinite detention," ProPublica, Dec. 21, 2010)Major cities in the United States and Europe may be the new victims of the global debt crisis in 2011.("$2tn debt crisis threatens to bring down 100 U.S. cities," The Guardian, Dec. 20, 2010)
