Hello IMCs!

As most of you know, the tenth anniversary of the founding of 
Indymedia is approaching and will occur at the end of November and 
the beginning of December.  None of us who were involved from the 
start can't believe ten years have passed!

Over the last year, several IMC organizers have proposed the idea of 
having a series of global Indymedia gatherings, either online or in 
person, to mark the anniversary and to talk about where Indymedia is 
going from here.  Despite the global network's uncertain status, 
Indymedia still has many resources and some positive organizing is 
taking place, especially on a local level.  The idea was to talk 
about what's broken and either fix it or discard it, and to isolate 
what's working and suggest ways to enhance it.  The Ecuador IMC 
offered to host a global gathering and other IMCs around the world 
said they'd consider it.

Despite this enthusiasm, there hasn't been enough support for the 
idea to make it viable on a global scale.  There is still the 
possibility of a global meeting or series of meeting taking place 
upon the initiative of those who are still active in the network, but 
nothing will happen on a formal level by the end of 2009.

So instead of marking the tenth anniversary of Indymedia with global 
gatherings, we encourage people to reflect on the experiences of the 
last ten years themselves and with their fellow local IMC 
organizers.  We all can look back and find good times, frustration, 
successes, failures, and everything in between.  There are many 
important lessons here, some of which we've already learned (or 
refused to learn), some of which others may one day learn from us.

Some IMCs and related groups, like the Los Angeles (U.S.) IMC 
<info at la.indymedia.org>, the Venezuela Centro and the Sancturay for 
Independent Media in Troy, New York (http://www.mediasanctuary.org/) 
are marking the occasion over the next few weeks with celebrations
