here are some thoughts i had about setting up a emergency broadcast system at
DNC / boston IMC

needs:

location and computer for emergency broadcast system
configure shoutcast broadcasting box / server
find other relay folk and servers
hotline to call in reports / phone interface hardware
find basic audio gear: mixer, mic, cd and record player
second computer to rip audio and publish to boston imc / radio indy

that's it for now...

ROLL YR OWN WEB RADIO / EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM

hello from blast furnace radio!

since november 1999 we have been using winamp with the shoutcast dsp
plug-in, and shoutcast server for our web radio broadcasts:
http://shoutcast.com

with three 1 to 2.2 gig windows computers we are now running two web radio
stations, off the cheapest DSL connection and a webcam using real player
(legally), serving and encoding off the same machines...when daisy chained
with other web radio stations and servers during various uprisings it can carry
the load.

after 4 years running 24/7 the only time we are off the
air is when we, once a week, scan disk and defrag, now with back up
computers this does not even transpire.

to create a web radio station you need a static ip address, a 5.1 sound
blaster live-full duplex sound card, a little mixer, mic, cd player,
record player, and a phone interface for live call-ins
(http://www.fullcompass.com/Products/pages/SKU--53346/)
or mic the speaker phone. finally, firewalls and router don't
seem to compatiable with streaming media.

more importantantly what is needed is LIVE broadcasts, cannned music and
repetetive playlists do not maketh a radio station, especially LIVE
broadcasts from the street, via cell and pay phones and local music and live
interviews.

it takes more than tech know-how to make radio, or radio
jounalism or to spin the wax...it takes fun, wild, happy people.

from the studio's of our dank basement i salute you
all, we'se got lots of software, mp3, and DIY web radio manuals, just call
1-888-NOTOWAR or drop us a line...

at the mic,

             vincent
