Report
======

Today (2008-01-17) the cmi-brasil-tech collective and aggregates did an
inspection in the docs.indymedia.org backups toghether with a workshop about
linux, shell script, backups and file-system. This is a report about what we
accomplished and a proposal of continuity of the work.

We thought it would be better to copy the docs backups to another place where
we could have easy access to update the data and be sure not to interfere with
the original data, so we started to copy all this data to marieta's backup
vserver. By tomorrow, all the data should be there.

We also created a script which compares the content of the files and generates
lists of inconsistent files, inexistent files on the backup, and files whose
access outputs errors. This script is still running and as soon as we have the
results, we'll share them. There are about 47.000 files to be inspected, and so
far the stats are:

  indymedia at ellen:~/docs/listagens$ ./info.sh
  11351 inspected_files
  52 inconsistent_files
  259 inexistent_files
  29 md5_error

The file md5_error contains the files whose attempt to calculate the md5 hash
encountered some kind of error, most of them file system errors (Input/output
error, Stale NFS file handle, and so).

Our working dir in the server is /home/indymedia/docs and all the files and
scripts are located in /home/indymedia/docs/listagens and we are storing
important references like a timeline about all the reports since the first
reboot/problem in /home/indymedia/docs/ref.

Up with the backup
==================

As the docs are source of important data which should be available all the time
(many of us are already feeling its absence) we also thought it would be a good
idea to put its last backup back online on marieta server as read-only.

The backup is being transfered to marieta, and we already installed foswiki
(http://www.foswiki.org/), a twiki GPL fork, and copied a bit of the content to
test it (the data/Main/ dir). The results can be seen in:

  http://docs.midiaindependente.org/

We calculated that the content should be transferred in another 15 hours from
now, so when this is done we'll be able to try to put the backups up and give
some feedback about this.

For those who want to participate or clarify doubts, we are hanging out on
#arrumando-docs at irc.indymedia.org.

Solidarity,
Some guys from imc-brasil-tech
