[Imc-drupal-dev] smtp mail in drupal

i have the A record for the bigmuddyimc site on a server on my network. the mx record is at another server. so i want to use smtp mailer in drupal.it uses phpmailer. i used the ip address instead of the url of the server. i'm still getting an error message though. 
 "fsockopen(): unable to connect to :25 in /smtp.module on line 1834."

any thoughts on this
