We're using event.module at the moment, it fullfills most of our needs.
Although I've read some good points in favour of the combination you
mention (CCK + date + calendar view). I've played with these, but
couldn't get the desired result (I was a bit short on time to test it
properly).

Right now, we're using the basicevent node type in combination with
views for a (very) simple listing of events. You can show start / end
dates with views, and build a list view like this.

I'm convinced that cck + date api + calendar view allows for more
flexibility, but it needs more configuration. If you have the time for
this, I would go for this.

Haven't tried it, but must be cool to use. Date works without problems
(only used it on 5.0 sites though).  Which version of Drupal are you
using btw?

Perhaps add a link field for more event info?

No idea. There is the Leech module, maybe that allows you to do this
(http://drupal.org/project/leech).
