My point was, I think we should focus on getting an indymedia drupal 
install profile working.  i know this needs a lot of work -- 
developing list of modules and out-of-the-box configuration as well 
as documentation.

Probably by the time this was complete, install profiles would be 
available from drupal.org as tarballs with all required modules. 
development of this is in progress, see the polls on 
http://groups.drupal.org/distributions

My personal feeling is that customization for indymedia sites can be 
performed as extra modules rather than hacking/patching core.  for 
example, using a module to strip/anonymize info in the database.  
(of course getting some core patches committed could help too, let 
me know if there are any I could review.)
