I have not been in touch with install profiles, when I first heard about
it I thank there was a module able to extract the config of a site and
put it into a code suitable for installing another site --too imaginative :P
As in [1], I think a tarball of the modules and a dump of the database
is enough to create a new site not from scratch but from a convenience
starting point (enabled modules, tinymce, roles, localization,
categories...).
Perhaps we are putting too much efforts or desires/expectation in an
install profile, and the key is to have a working basis for a indymedia
site. This base can be translated to a profile, or can be taken as is
and cloned.

I agree.
Patches I'm aware of are for events to not show hidden nodes[2],
patching bootstrap to strip IPs at [3] and these old notes at [4].
Don't know if they're currently applicable.
