I used the Flashvideo module on another site (as in not on our indy
site), and it worked very well. We had to compile ffmpeg to enable mp3
audio support (on a Ubuntu Feisty server), but other than that, it
worked pretty much out of the box. Video conversion happens with the
Drupal cron run, so conversion 'timing' depends on how you set up cron.
Anyhow, that's the way it was a couple of months ago when I used it. You
could probably tell Drupal to convert the videos right after they're
uploaded.

I'm planning to implement this module on www.indymedia.be. I'll report
back after I did some tests.
