you might want to also check out indytube as an option for handling  
transcoding.

Indytube is aCMS-agnostic solution for in-browser streaming video  
with asynchronous encoder(s)

A number of Indymedias are using it as is EngageMedia
eg. http://www.engagemedia.org/Members/pc/videos/extraction2-
