Jumping in on the taxonomy_access question:

We were using taxonomy_access to prevent anonymous users to put nodes
into categories - on our setup, that's done by the editorial team. Doing
this with taxonomy_access created a very big node_access table though.

I recently found out about the vocabperms module
(http://drupal.org/project/vocabperms). Cleaner and simpler: it just
deals with access on a vocabulary level, not on a node level. There's a
few small things to iron out in this module, but it seems solid. I
believe something like this might be of use to some indy sites -
depending on the editorial organisation of an IMC. Anyone else using this?
