In reply to my own post,

Here is an updated version fixing a bunch of hideous bugs, and now using
drupal's status flag to properly hide things. This means you need to use
custom node types which allow all users to view hidden nodes. This is
provided also (the 'article' module).

Editors now need the 'moderate content' permission.
